Angel
1971 yılında Litvanya’nın küçük bir kasabası olan Ogre’de doğdum. Ortaokulu burada bitirdikten sonra ülkenin başkenti olan Riga’daki üniversiteye gittim ve İngiliz filolojisinden BA derecesiyle mezun oldum. Ilköğretimim esnasında sanat okuluna devam ettim ve bir çok ‘genç ressamlar’ yarışmasına katıldım.
2004 yılında yerel fotoğraf yarışması “maja”da ilk ödülümü aldım. Başka bir yerel yarışma da “Redzi Rigu” ödülünü ve uluslararası gençlik fotoğraf yarışmasında “Cantabria+

Fotoğraf alanım soyut şeyler ve manipule edilmiş doğal fotoğraflar olduğu kadar insanlar, portreler, doğada insan portreleri ve en sevdiğim konu olan çocuklardır. 
Sense
S&B fotoğrafları daha fazla tercih ederim. Gerçekte, insanlar üzerine çalışmaya başladığımdan beri alanımı değiştirmedim. Örneğin kuşlar, manzaralar, hayvanlar gibi konulara asla odaklanmadım, çünkü insan duygularını, insan heyecanını tercih ediyorum ve bu yüzden çalışmalarımda insanları gösteriyorum. Kahramanlarım çevremdeki insanlar. Sık sık 2 çocuğumun fotoğraflarını çekerim.

Gündelik yaşamımdan, çevremdeki olaylardan, dinlediğim müzikten, ilham alırım. Sadece bazı zamanlar duygularımdan ya da çevremdeki diğer insanların hislerinden esinlenirim, bu yüzden fotoğraflarımın bazıları depresif veya siyah görünebilir, çünkü hayatımızın en hüzünlü yanını göstermeye çalışırım. Bugünlerde etrafımızda fakir ve evsiz çok fazla insan var. Önce de söylediğim gibi, genel olarak insani şeylere odaklanmayı tercih ederim, örneğin bir kuşun ya da kedinin manzarasının resmini göremem, onları hissedemem, aynı şey durağan hayat, spor ve manzara fotoğrafları için de geçerli. Beni etkileyen şey, insan ilişkileri, çevremizdeki hayattır. O yüzden portrelere odaklanıyorum.

Jan Saudek’ten çok esinlendim, bu yüzden portrelerimin bazıları insanlara garip gelebilir, çok nadir olarak “ klasik güzellik” portreleri gösteriririm. Daha derine inmekten hoşlanırım. Portre sadece gözler, dudaklar, ifade değildir aynı zamanda ruha bir bakıştır. Bazen fikirler, bilgisayarda fotoğrafa sonraki işlemleri yapmaya başladığım zaman doğmasına rağmen, potre çekmek için zamana, model ve fikre ihtiyaç duyarım.

Eskiden “ diğer taraftan, daha derin yanından, ruhundan geleni göstermekten korkma” derdim.Emin değilim ama sanırım fotoğraf alanında daha fazlası olacağım, belki daha ciddi projeler yapacağım, fotoğraflarımı denizaşırı yayınlayacağım. En sevdiğim iki modelim kızım ve oğlum daima burdalar!

Sanırım birazcık resim gibi, durağan da olsa kendi stilime sahibim. Insanlar sık sık fotoğraflarımın eski resimler gibi olduğunu söylüyorlar. Bu yüzden çalışmalarımı PhotoShopta özel bir şekilde yapıyorum. Çok katmanlı olarak çalışırım. Çünkü bir fotoğrafta sık sık birden fazla fotoğraf , fırçalar, farklı dokular kullanırım. Bazen sonucun ne olacağını kendim de bilmem, süreç üzerinde çalışırım, uzun çalışma saatlerinden sonra amacıma ulaşırım. Ama sadece fotoğrafı çektiğim sonuca ulaştığım da olur, herhangi bir sonradan işlemeye ihtiyacım olmaz, belki kontrastı ayarlama ve S&B dışında.
Gundega Dege 1.) Uzun bir süredir senin, yalnızlık, tedirginlik,şiddetli ruhsal derinlik hissi aldığım tasvirlerini (fotograflarını) izliyorum. Sana ilham veren şey nedir? Yaratıcı gücünü nereden buluyorsun? --- Etrafımda olan her şeyden hayatın kendisinden. Yani yalnızca ailemde ya da ülkemde olan olaylar değil, hem pozitif hem de negatif duygularla dolu olan dünya üzerindeki hayattan. İnsan hayatını bozucu önemleri sebebiyle sanatım üzerinde tabii ki daha etkili. Dediğiniz gibi yalnızlık hissi, kaybolmuşluk hissi, sevgisizlik ve acı. Gülümseyen insanları bile anlayamıyorsunuz acaba o gülümsemeler gerçek mi? Çünkü bugünlerde en sık gördüğümüz şey maskeler. ---İnsan ve dürüst kalmak. Yüzümü maskelere karşı ya da maskelerin ardında gizlememek. Sanat çalışmalarım için de aynı şey geçerli, onlar dürüst, bazen gerçeküstü olabilirler ama onlardaki duygular gerçek. Esas olarak sanatın özü olan şey insan ruhudur ve benim için en önemli şey ruhu unutmamaktır. Bu günlerde sanat çok ticarileşti ve biz sık sık gerçek sanatı unutuyoruz. ---Onlar benim hayallerim ve umutlarım. Bazen gece rüyamda bazı hayaller görürüm ve sabah uyandığımda kameramı kapar ve şehirde, insanların yüzlerinde onları yakalamayı denerim. Benim görünmez dünyam bilinçaltıdır. Çoğunlukla karanlık ama aynı zamanda aydınlık! Tam bir tezat sis'te olduğu gibi. 4.) Fotoğrafa ne zaman başladınız? Sizi bu faaliyete sürükleyen güdü neydi? ----Sanatta ilk adımlarım çocukluğumda ve okul çağımda resim okuluna katıldığım zaman ve bir çok resim yarışması ve sergisinde yer aldığımda attım. Ortaokuldan sonra yabancı diller öğrenmeye başladım ve 5 yıl boyunca yabancı dil öğrendiğim üniversiteye girdim.Bu arada resim yapmaya ve şiir yazmaya devam ediyordum. Sonra çevirmen olarak çalışmaya başladım ve yerel bir gazetede halkla ilişkiler uzmanlığı ve foto muhabirliği yaptım. Yaklaşık 3 yıl önce fotoğraf dünyasını keşfettim. Okuldayken de fotoğraflar çekiyordum ama gündelik(tesadüfi) şeylerdi. 2004 te ilk dijital fotoğraf makinemi aldığım zaman ciddi olarak çalışmaya başladım. Dediğim gibi etrafımdaki hayat ve ruhum benden fotoğrafa başlamamı talep etti. ---Bu bizim dünyamız, acı, keder, savaşlarla dolu ve geri kalan her şeyle. Küçük bir melek hepsinden korumaya çalışıyor; O bizim meleğimiz, daha iyi bir dünya için bizim umutlarımız ve hayallerimiz. Bu serilere tekrar tekrar geri dönüyorum çünkü hayatımda onları görme ihtiyacı hissettiğim zamanlar oluyor. Bazen insanlar, onlara bakınca ağladıklarını söylüyorlar. Melek imajlarımın ana modeli kızım Linda yanımda bence kendimi de onların yerine koyuyorum. ---Evet, bazen isterim! Bu tanıştığım insanların ne kadar açık ve benimle işbirliği yapmaya istekli olduklarına bağlı. 7.) Klasik fotoğrafla karşılaştırılınca çağdaş(güncel) fotoğrafın farkı nedir? Bu konuda ne düşünüyorsunuz? ---Benim düşünceme göre klasik fotoğraf daha anıtsal(muazzam), ama çağdaş fotoğraf dijital çağla birlikte ulaştığımız yeni stiller(biçemler, tarzlar) gibi daha hareketli, çok hızlı bir gelişim için daha fazla olasılıklara sahip. Fotoğrafların sonradan işlenmesi(post processing) fotoğrafı sanat eserine dönüştürdü, sanatçı fırçalar, boyalı dokular kullanıyor, böylece bazen fotoğraf nerede bitiyor ve dijital sanat nerede başlıyor söylemek gerçekten zor. Ama bir kez daha tekrar etmek isterim ki fotoğrafı zihinsel ve hassas duygular üzerine geliştirmek için sanatsal çalışmanın fikrini anlamak çok önemlidir. ---Fotoğraflarımı çekmek için bütün ihtiyacım olan benim ve modellerim için doğru ruh hali. Daima insani şeylere, heyecanlara, duygulara, bilinçaltına olduğu kadar iç dünyaya odaklandım. Her ikisi de önemli, resimlerdeki insanlar ve sanat! Benimle çalışmak isteyen herhangi birine, eğer kendini kendi içinden görmek istiyorsan, ben doğru kişiyim, sana ruhunu göstereceğim derim. 9. ) Çok derinden anlamış gibi göründüğünüz ve izleyicileri de çok şaşırtan bir başka konu da çocuklar. Çocukları bu kadar özel yapan nedir? ---Elbette, çünkü benim 2 çocuğum var, çocuklar bu sebeple çok özel! Onları çok iyi korumalı ve gelecekleri için sorumluluk duymalıyız. Çocuklara nasıl davrandığınız çok önemlidir, çünkü onlar evrenin küçük ruhlarıdır.Toplum ve kurallar tarafından bozulmamışlardır. Onlar daha iyi bir dünya için bizim tek umudumuz. ---İnsanların büyük ölçüde zihinsel(ruhsal)tatmin yerine maddi tatmine daha fazla ihtiyaç duymaları gerçeği nedeniyle gerçekten kolay değil. Ayrıca insanlar gülen yüzler, harika günbatımları, renkli çiçekler ve benzerleri türü fotoğrafları daha fazla görmek istiyorlar. Bana sık sık niçin bu karanlığı ve hayatın acılarını gösteriyorsun diyorlar. Gözlerinizi kapatmak ve görmemek daha kolay. İnsanlar bencil oldular ve sanattan bekledikleri pozitif, güzel, rahatsız edici olmayan duygular. Bu yüzden aile komedileri seyrediyorlar, country tarzı ve pop şarkıları dinliyorlar, kırmızı spor arabalar alıyorlar, tatil için İspanya sahiline gidiyorlar . 11.) Sanat hakkında ne düşünüyorsunuz? Bugünün dünyasında ne kadar önemli? ---Bugün için sanat eksikliği tatmin edici bir tanımlama. Estetik objelerin yaratımında yetenek ve hayal gücünün kullanımı, çevreler yada diğerleriyle paylaşılan tecrübeler gibi bazı şeyleri yapıldığı gibi nitelendirmek daha kolay. 12. Hangi sanatçılardan hoşlanırsınız? Size kim esin kaynağı olur? ---Favori fotoğrafçım Jan Saudi’dir. İlhamımın çoğunu onun çalışmalarından alırım, ayrıca ülkemdeki günlük hayatta var tabii. En iyi yardımcılarım ailemdir. Kendi de fotoğraf sanatçısı olan eşim, Andre Viruses ve aynı zaman da modellerim de olan iki çocuğum, Linda ve Daniel. 13.) Okuyucularımız için bir sözünüz veya bir tavsiyeniz var mı? Teşekkürler. ----İnsanlara dünyayı diğer tarafından göstermekten korkmamalısınız ve şunu unutmamalısınız ki fotoğraf çekmeyi istemek bir şeydir, ama onları çekerken güçlü ve duygulu veya akıllı olmalısınız. Hangi kameraya sahip olduğunuz önemli değil, önemli olan zihninizde ve ruhunuzda neye sahip olduğunuzdur.
During school time I learned in art school and took part in several young painters’ competitions. My every day work is public relations and photojournalism. I started photography 2 years ago more seriously, when I together with my husband bought our first dsrl. Since that I started to post my photos in different web sites in connection with photos, such as photo.net and photosight.ru. Since that time I also started to post my photos in different contests, in local and also in international, I got the first prize in local photo contest "maja" in 2004, the prize in local photo contest “Redzi Rigu” and got the 1 rst and 2 nd prize in the international youth photo contest " Cantabria + 10" . Together with my husband , make 2 photo exhibitions in local town in 2005. As well as made together with him one-day excibition in the capital of Latvia Riga - in youth club " Depo" . I am married and my husband is also photographer, we have 2 children who very often are our models, we have 2 - daughter - Linda , she is 8, and son - Daniels (6). The area of the photography are - people, portraits, people portraits in nature, most favourite - children, as well as abstract things, photo manipulation as well as natural photos, I prefer more BW photos. In fact I haven’t changed my areas since the very beginning its people, I have never focused on for instance - birds, landscapes, animals...because I prefer human feelings, human emotions and that’s why I show people in my works. My heroes are people around me, I very often photograph my 2 children, I got inspiration from my everyday, from events around, from music I listen, just sometimes from my emotions how I feel or how other people feel around me, that’s why some of my photos may look depressive or black, because I try to show the saddest side of our life, there are so many unhappy people around us nowadays - many poor and homeless. As I told before, I prefer to focus on human things in general, I cant see the picture, the scene for instance of the bird or the cat, I cant feel them, the same goes to still life, sports and landscape photography, the things that touches me is - human relations, the life around, that’s why I focus on portraits. In fact I am very much inspired from Jan Saudek, that’s why some of my portraits maybe seams to people weird, I very rare show such called " classical beautiful " portraits, I like to watch deeper, the portrait is not only the eyes, the lips, the expression, but this is the look in soul. To me to shoot the portraits - I need time, the model and the idea, although sometimes ideas arise when I started post processing of the photography in computer. I used to say - “ Don’t be afraid to show yourself from another side, from the deeper side, from your soul. “ I am not sure, but I think I will be more in the field of the photography, maybe some more serious projects - I wish to put my photos abroad. My 2 favourite models, my daughter and son are always here! But as to the rest, they are people around, some friends, and some old school mate... I think I have my own style that is a little bit still like the painting, people often say that my photos are like old painted pictures, that is why I use specific way of post processing in PhotoShop of my works - that is work with several layers, because I very often use several photos in one, as well as I use brushes and different textures, sometimes I don’t know what will be the result, I am in the process, and after several hours of work I got the aim - the final photo. But it also happens, I just make a shot and I see this is final, I don’t need any post processing, except maybe making contrast and BW. What I advice to others - Just take the camera all the time with you, and make many photos....just make photos of everything you see around, maybe start just from people besides you, make self - portraits, make home studio works, combine various things and shoot them. You don’t need I expensive camera, everybody can start with just simple digital 4 megapixel cameras. The 2 nd advice- look for others, how others do photos, watch photo web sites, read photo magazines, try to find the people with similar thinking. And the main - don’t be afraid, it doesn’t matter what camera you got, the main thing - have your ideas! My working camera at the moment is Olympus e- 300, and use standard zuiko lenses as well as old Russian and Japan lenses such as helios 44 and vivitar. Interview Gundega Dege 1. I watched your images for a very long time. What I get is a feeling of loneliness, of disturbance, of intense spiritual depth. What is what inspires you? Where do you find your creative force? The life as such – everything that happens around me. I mean not only events in my family, or in my country, but life on the Earth – that is full of different emotions both positive and negative. Of course more influence on my art is because of disturbing moments in human life. As you said – feeling of loneliness, feeling of being lost, unloved and hurt. You even don’t know about smiling people – are these smiles real? Because that what we see nowadays are very often masks. 2. Our universe seems to forget about what is important. What is important for you as a photographer, as an artist, as human? To stay human and honest. Not to hide my face against mask. The same refers to my art work, they are honest, maybe sometimes surreal, but the emotions in them are real. The most important thing for me is not to forget about the soul – the human soul as such as well as about the soul as the spirit of artwork. Nowadays art is so commercial and we often forget about real art. 3. Artists seem to have the power to get a glimpse in the invisible world. How does your invisible world look like? Those are my dreams and hopes. Sometimes I dream at night about some images and in the morning when I wake up I get camera and try to catch them in the town, in peoples faces….My invisible world is subconscious. It is mainly dark, but also light! It’s full of contrasts as well as fog. 4. When did you started to photograph? What where the things that drove you to start this activity? My first steps in art were made during her childhood and school time when I attended drawing school and took part in several drawing competitions and exhibitions. After studies in the Secondary school I started to learn foreign languages and entered the University where for 5 years was studding foreign languages, meanwhile I was continuing to do drawings and write poetry. After that I started to work as the translator, later as the public relations specialist and photojournalist in local newspaper. So approximately 3 years ago, I discovered the world of photography. I was taking pictures during school time, but it was just casual. In 2004. I started to do it seriously when I bought her firs digital photo camera. As I said before, the life around and my soul asked me to start photography! 5. You see a lot of angels, but your angels are manly sad. Why is that? Do we need angels? What do they stand for? This is our world, full of pain, suffering, wars and all the rest. A little angel tries to save it all; it is our angel, our hopes and dreams for a better world. I come back to these series over and over because I have moments in my life when I need to see them. Sometimes people say they are crying when they look at them. I think I have put much of myself in them, as well as my daughter Linda who is the main model of my angel images. 6. A lot of your images are haunting. Are you a haunted artist? Do you want to haunt other people imagination? Well, sometimes I do! It depends on the people I meet, how open they are and willing to cooperate with me! 7. What do you think is different in the contemporary photography compared with the classical photography? In my opinion classical photography is more monumental, but contemporary photography is more mobile as well as have reached new styles – with starting digital era , photography have got more possibilities to develop very fast. As we all know – the post processing of photos has made photography into piece of art, artist use brushes , painted textures, so sometimes its really difficult to say where the photography ends and digital art starts. But once again, I want to say, it is very important to get the idea of the artistic work, to build up photography on mental and sensitive emotions. 8. Who are the people that you capture in your photos? Are they important or is the artistic idea more important? To shoot my images all I need is the right mood for me and the models. I have always focused on human things...emotions and feelings, the inner world as well as the subconscious. The both are important – people on the pictures and art! To anyone who would like to work with me I would say that if you want to see yourself from the inside, I am the right person. I will show you your soul! 9. Another subject that you seem to understand very deeply, and that intrigues a lot the viewer, is children. What do children have so special? Of course, because I myself have 2 children, the children are special as such! We have to protect them a lot and be responsible for their future. It is very important how you treat children, because they are little souls of the Universe, they are unspoiled by society and rules. They are our only hope for better world. 10. How is it to be an artist in your country? What are your artistic and intellectual satisfactions? In fact is not easy, mainly because of the fact, that people need more material satisfaction nor mental. Besides that people like to see more photos of smiling faces, beautiful sunsets, colorful flowers and etc. They often say me: “Why do you show us this darkness and painfulness of life”. It’s easier to close eyes and don’t see it. People have become selfish and that what they need from art is positive, good not disturbing emotions, that are why they watch family comedies, listen to country style and pop songs, purchase red sport cars, go to Spain seaside for the holidays and etc. 11. What do you think about art? How important is it in the today world? Today art lacks a satisfactory definition. It is easier to describe it as the way something is done -- the use of skill and imagination in the creation of aesthetic objects, environments, or experiences that can be shared with others. 12. What artists do you like? Who inspires you? My favorite photographer is Jan Saudi much of my inspiration comes from his works, as well as from everyday life here in my country. My best assistants are my family - my husband, André Viruses, who is also a photographer and my 2 children, Linda and Daniel, who are also my models. 13. A word for our readers, an advice maybe. Thanks. You shouldn't be afraid to show people the world from the other side, and remember that it's one thing to wish to take photos, but you must have the power and sense to take them! No matter what camera you have, the main thing is what you have in your mind and soul!
