Okyanus yüzeyi altındaki dünyaya ait ilk hatıralarım, Maui Keawekapu kıyılarında zıpkınla balık avlayan babamı izlediğim zamanlara aitti. Küçük bir çocuktum ve 1950’lerin ortalarıydı. O zamanlar Maui’de çok az insan yaşıyordu. Yol kirli ve sahiller benim kişisel alanım gibiydi. Şimdi yarım yüzyıl sonra, bir scuba dalgıcıyım ve denize olan tutkum saplantı haline geldi. Su altı fotoğraflarımın çoğu, babamla birlikte şnorkelle dalış yaptığımız alanın bir kaç mil içindeki aynı alanda çekilmiştir. Su altı dünyası ihtişam doludur ve her dalışta hala görülecek yeni şeyler vardır. Deniz koşulları kötü olduğu zaman, yüzeydeki doğal dünyada amatörce uğraşmaktan da hoşlanırım.

Aynı zamanda özel su altı fotoğrafçılığı atölyelerini yönetir ve Maui adasındaki su altı fotoğrafçılığı dalışlarına öncülük ederim.

Ben, etrafımdaki, hem denizin üstü hem altına ait doğal güzellikleri çekme fırsatı elde edebileceğim bir yerde yaşıyor olmakla kutsanmışım. Fotoğraflarımın çoğu Hawai Adaları’ndandır.

Buradaki tüm çekimler Nikon D70 ile yapılmıştır. Su altındayken bu makine Ikelite marka su altı kılıfı içerisindedir ve bu sisteme  2 adet DS125 flaş bağlıdır. Favori makro lensim Nikkor 105 mm lenstir. Aynı zamanda 60mm Nikkor objektif de kullanıyorum ve zaman zaman 105mm objektifime 2x tele-dönüştürücü ekliyorum. Geniş açı için Nikkor 10.5 mm ve Tokina 12-24 mm kullanıyorum.

Bir moda akımı olarak su altı fotoğrafçıları, nadir hayvanların çekimlerini yapmak için çok daha egzotik yerlere gidiyorlar. Bu tür seyahatleri maddi olarak karşılayamadığımdan, bölgemdeki vahşi yaşam çekimlerimi yeni yollarla yapmaya çalışıyorum. Benim için en uygun yer olduğunu sanıyorum. Tabii ki, buradaki dost yeşil deniz kaplumbağaları bunu yapabilmem için bana pek çok fırsat sunuyorlar.

Benim içim önemli şeylerin başında, çok sevdiğim resifleri korumak gelir. Dünyayı eğitmek için fotoğraflarımı kullanabildiğim her yerde – hem dalgıçlar hem olmayanlar için- bu resiflerin sadece gidilip görülecek güzel yerler değil, aynı zamanda dünyanın yaşam çevriminin başladığı yerler olduğunu vurgularım. Eğer resifler ölürse dünya da ölür.

My earliest memories of the world beneath the ocean surface were of following my dad while he was spear fishing off the coast of Keawekapu on Maui. I was a little boy and it was the mid 1950’s. Few people lived in South Maui then. The road was dirt and the beaches seemed to be my personal domain. Now, over a half of a century later, I am scuba diving and my passion for the sea has become obsession. Much of my underwater photography is captured within a couple of miles of the same area I snorkeled with my father. The undersea world is still full of splendor and there are still new things to see on every dive. When water conditions are too rough, I also like to dabble in the natural world above the surface.

I also conduct private underwater photography workshops and lead underwater photography dives on the island of Maui.

I am blessed to live in a place where the opportunities for capturing natural beauty are all around me both above and below the sea. Most of my images are from the Hawaiian island of Maui.

All of the images here were shot with a Nikon D70. While underwater, it is housed in an Ikelite housing that sports 2 ds125 strobes. My favorite macro lens is a Nikkor 105mm lens (non VR). I also use a Nikor 60mm and sometimes add a 2x TC to the 105mm. For wide angle I use a Nikkor 10.5mm and the Tokina 12-24mm.

As a trend, underwater photographers are going to more and more exotic places to capture shots of rare animals. Since I cannot afford such trips, I try to shoot the local wildlife in new ways. I guess that’s my niche. Of course the friendly green sea turtles here have provided me with many opportunities to do just that.

High on my priority list is the protection of the reef I love. Anywhere I can use my images to help educate the world – divers and non divers alike – that these reefs are not only beautiful places to visit, they are also the place where the life cycle of the earth begins. If the reef dies, so does the rest of our planet.
