Chocó is a no man's land. The large inaccessible jungle area in the western lowlands of Colombia is mostly inhabited by AfroColombian population, descendents of the African slaves. High presence of malaria, guerilla drug traffic routes, tropical deseases and only irregular river transport makes this region virtually lost. Gold that is being found in Chocó's jungle rivers is the only hope for many although they never find what they are dreaming about. Women miners are working in the hot tropical humid climate, miring in the goldbearing mud, searching for the gold and platine dust. They will never give up their effort simply because there is no other way to live off.

Jan Sochor, freelance photographer, was born in the Czech Republic. He is changing his base between South America and Europe frequently, he lived and worked in Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Spain and the Czech Republic in the last five years. America has become a major theme for him since then. He focuses on long term projects trying to show and document the (Latin) American continent, the everyday life, social, political and cultural issues mostly. His photographs and stories have appeared in numerous Czech magazines, newspapers and publications, including Reflex magazine, National Geographic CZ, Instinkt, Hospodarske noviny.
