A. Aubrey Bodine, dünya fotoğraf çevrelerince 20. yüzyıllın en iyi fotoğrafçılarından biri olarak kabul ediliyor. Aubrey Bodine'nin fotoğraf kariyeri 1923 yılında, Baltimore Sun'da çalışırken Thomas Viaduct'un fotoğraflarını Sunday gazetesi editörüne teslim ettiği zamanlarda başladı. A. AUBREY BODINE (1906 1970)
In photographic circles around the world, A. Aubrey Bodine was regarded as one of the finest pictorialists of the twentieth century. His pictures were exhibited in hundreds of prestigious shows, in scores of museums, and he won awards against top competition. His photographs were seen in the Sunday Sun, numerous books and magazines, on calendars, as murals, and as framed prints decorating homes.
Aubrey Bodine's photographic career began in 1923 when as an office boy with the Baltimore Sun he submitted photographs of the Thomas Viaduct at Relay to the editor of the Sunday paper, and they were published. From first to last Aubrey Bodine was a newspaperman covering all sorts of stories with his camera news events, famous people, unusual places and curious activities. This gave him opportunities to travel throughout the region and learn about it in every tide, wind, weather and season. Out of this experience came remarkable documentary pictures of farming, oystering, hunting, soap boiling, blacksmithing, clock making, bricklaying and dozens of other occupations, and student nurses, Amish children, pilots of ships and planes, country folk and city folk, wood sheds and cathedrals, wagons and railroad engines, and, in short, almost everything of interest. Moreover, the documentary pictures are of the very finest quality, often artistic in design and lighting effects far beyond the usual standard of newspaper work.

But Bodine's talent ran deeper than this, and so did his ambition. He submitted photographs to national and international salon competitions and consistently won top honors. Bodine believed that photography could be a creative discipline, and he studied the principles of art at the Maryland Institute College of Art. The camera and the dark room equipment were tools to him like the painter's brush or the sculptor's chisel.
Bodine was a romantic pictorialist and this shows in his choice of subjects the old times and the old things, the beauties of nature, man as an individual, and similar ideas. The pictures are usually quiet in mood partly because of the subdued tones and partly because of a low tension design made of open curves and natural perspective.

Not the least of Bodine's artistic ability was his craftsmanship. He was always experimenting with his tools, but seldom made a mistake. Some of his best pictures were literally composed in the viewfinder of the camera. In other cases he worked on the negative with dyes and intensifiers, pencil marking, and even scraping to produce the effect he had in mind. He added clouds photographically, and made other even more elaborate manipulations. Bodine's rationale for all these technical alterations of the natural scene was simply that, like the painter, he worked from the model and selected those features which suited his sense of mood, proportion and design. The picture was the thing, not the manner of arriving at it. He did not take a picture, he made a picture.

Down on the lower Western Shore the Heys and Haws of the Ox-Driver and the crack of his whip are the first sounds of spring. On his farm, "Levels", near Prince Frederick, Joseph Sunderland drives his oxen in with a log from his wood lot. In both Calvert and St. Mary's counties a few of these animals are still in use for draft work.

Oldest State Capitol … The State House in Annapolis is the oldest state capitol still in use. Actually it is the third state house to be built in Maryland’s capital city; the first was erected in 1697. The present building dates from 1772 and has been the scene of many important events in American history. On December 23, 1783, George Washington resigned his commission in the Old Senate Chamber. Congress met there from November 1783 to June of 1784 and ratified the signing of the treaty of peace with England, which had been negotiated in Paris. The dome is of hand hewn wood held together with wooden pins.

The Ferry Philadelphia, better known as “Smokey Joe” because of the thick cloud of black smoke that trailed from her stack, plied between Baltimore and Love Point on the Eastern Shore, in all sorts of weather. She achieved a legendary reputation for her rescues and was immortalized in the ballad which began, “Ol’ Cap’n Perry of the Love Point Ferry.”

This type of net is large and square; it is closed at the bottom and its upper edges are tied to stakes which hold them above water. Funnel-shaped nets lead into it beneath the surface and fish entering these are trapped in the main "pound". These watermen are working the Susquehanna Flats.

This photograph was made about 1950 and hung in 24 salons, most of them abroad. It won first prize in Bengal, a medal at Ghent, and a plaque in South Africa. It is another fine example of controlled use of light and shadow.

THE MOST DIFFICULT JOB IN THE WORLD … Tonging oysters by hand from the bay bottom is tough, cold, rugged work. Men go out in small boats with rakes on the ends of handles which sometimes measure twenty-four feet in length. Most of the tonging is done in the cold weather when ice frequently forms on the handles. The teeth of the rake scrape the oysters off the bottom. Special areas are set aside for the hand tongers; dredgers are not allowed there. If either finds the other infringing an argument ensues. This photograph appeared in a January 1949 Sun Magazine article that identified the setting as Tilghman Island, Maryland.

Scattered throughout the Chesapeake and its tributaries are a great variety of lighthouses that have warned and guided mariners in all sorts of weather. Located at the South River entrance to the Chesapeake Bay, the Thomas Point Light was built in 1825 and is still in operation. The last manned lighthouse on the Chesapeake, it was automated in 1986. CHINCOTEAGUE’S WILD PONIES … Clam diggers, oystermen and fishermen turn cowboys once each year to roundup the ponies that run wild on Assateague Island which is on the Atlantic side of Virginia’s Eastern Shore. The men, in boats and on horseback, make the ponies swim the 400-foot channel from Assateague to Chincoteague Island. There, in a famous summer event known as Pony Penning, the small, shaggy ponies are auctioned off. Sometimes as many as 100 are sold, and some bring $125. According to tradition, the ponies are descendants of Spanish horses that were shipwrecked off the coast hundreds of years ago. Another explanation is that they are offspring of ponies that strayed from Virginia plantations. A best-selling children’s book and a movie were based on the life of a pony named “Misty”.

STEPS-AND STEPS ... The white steps of Baltimore have become the city’s trademark and a marvel to visitors. Most of them are white marble, from nearby quarries, and homeowners vie in keeping them bright. In any block, there is seldom a day that someone is not out scrubbing them. On the older houses, the scraping of countless thousands of footsteps has worn grooves in the stone. 2000 block of Penrose Avenue in West Baltimore.

When a dredge is dragged across an oyster bar by the towing vessel - this is called making a lick - the teeth of the dredge dig into the bar and force the oysters into the bag. When the bag is reasonably full, a donkey engine pulls it up on deck where it is dumped. A properly operated dredge will catch practically every oyster in its path. This photograph was taken while on assignment for the Sun Magazine. The large skipjack is the Maggie Lee, the small one on the horizon is the Lucy Tyler. Because of the stormy weather, Bodine had a difficult time photographing and was surprised to find this image when he developed the film. Not only did it win the $5,000 first prize in the 1949 Popular Photography national contest, but it was also awarded medals in Canada, Sweden, South Africa, Hong Kong, France, the Philippines, Italy, Portugal, and all across the United States.
The Ward Brothers, Ward Kardeşler, 1966

The Ward brothers, Steve and Lem, are world famed as waterfowl carvers. In a busy year about a quarter century ago, the brothers turned out 800 shooting stools which sold for $1.25 each. Today a pair of what Lem calls his “fancy ducks” will bring as much as $500, and he is a year and a half behind in filling orders. The men are masters of a disappearing art.

Taken near Havre de Grace, Maryland, this photograph won “best picture of the year” in 1944 from the Photographic Society of America. Bodine did extensive retouching to the negative before he made his final exhibition print. It was accepted in 32 salon competitions across America and around the world. It finished in the Top Ten seventeen times, receiving three First Place awards, an Honorable Mention, and a Medal. A fine example of this photograph is in the Baltimore Museum of Art.
