Bombay, yaklaşık 150 bini bulan hayat kadınları ile Hindistan’ın en büyük ten pazarı. Kızlar, buraya tüm Hindistan ve Nepal’den iş sözü verilerek getiriliyor, genelevlere ve kadın tellallarına satılıyorlar. “Hijras” (trans-seksüeller), kendiliklerinden geliyorlar; aileleri tarafından reddedildikleri için gidecek başka yerleri yok ve bu onlar için dilenmenin tek alternatifi. Erkek fahişeliği daha farklı yürüyor. Genellikle "jigololar" öğrenci ya da normal işleri var ve “cep harçlığı” için kendilerini satıyorlar. Onlara çok fazla tolerans gösterilmediği için sokakta açık açık çalışmıyorlar ve  müşterilerini (çoğunlukla gayler ama nadiren kadınlar da var) “pick up” barlarda bekliyorlar, internet üzerinden ve gece geç vakitte trenlerde ya da tren istasyonlarında buluyorlar. “Yüksek Fiyatlı” kızlar haricinde her cinsiyet için ortalama ücret 150 rupi (3 dolar)... Onlar şehrin meskun bölgelerinde yaşayorlar, görünürde “normal bir hayat” sürüyorlar ve müşterilerine direkt olarak kadın tellalları tarafından gönderiliyor ya da şık gece kulüplerinde ortaya çıkıyorlar ve minimum ücretleri de 100 dolar.

Mumbai, the largest flesh market in India has reached approximately the figure of 150 thousand prostitutes. Girls are brought with the promise of jobs from all over India and Nepal and sold out to brothels and pimps. “Hijras” (trans-genders), instead, come spontaneously; they are rejected from their families, have no other place to go and this is their only alternative to begging. Male prostitution work differently: usually "gigolos" are students or have normal jobs and sell themselves for "pocket money". They are little tolerated so do not operate openly in the street and look for customers (mostly gays but occasionally also women) in "pick up" bars, through the internet and, late in the night, trains and train stations. The average rate for all the genders is 150 rupees (3 dollars) except for "high range" girls...  They live in the residential area of the city, have an apparent “normal life” and are sent to clients directly by their pimp or show up in elegant nightclubs and their minimum rate is 100 dollars.

İtalyan fotoğrafçı Albertina d'Urso (Milan, 1976), ICP (International Center of Photography; Uluslararası Fotoğraf Merkezi), at TPW (Toscana Photographic Workshops; Toscana Fotoğraçılık Atölyesi) ve Agency VII’de eğitim gördü. Fotoğrafçı temel olarak sosyal ve insani yardım röportajlarına odaklanmıştır.

Bu tür çalışmalara kendini adaması 2004 yılında bir yardım derneğine destek için Mumbai’ye gittiğinde başladı: çalışması Skira tarafından yayınlanan Bombayslum adlı kitaba ve Milan’da Libreria degli Atellani’da bir sergiye hayat verdi, bu onun kariyerini ve yaşamını derinden değiştirdi.

2006’da Afganistan’daki savaşın sonuçlarını göstermeyi hedefleyen bir çalışma olan "Kabul mission of the municipality of Milan” a ve ISAF 8 görevi çalışmalarına ve durumu düzeltmeye çalışan İtalyan NGO’a katıldı, ve bunların sonucunda Arcade Vittorio Emanuele’de "Milano-Kabul no stop" sergisi ve “Respiro del Mondo 5 Afghanistan, Kabul” ve “Km 5072, Milano-Kabul no stop” adlı iki kitap yayınladı.

2007’de Piedmont’da yaşamın farklı yanlarını belgelemek için, Stanley Greene ve Kadir van Lohuizen tarafından rehberlik edilecek olan 12 fotoğrafçının katıldığı "Focus on Monferrato Masterclass" projesine seçildi ve Los Angeles’taki çeteler ve şiddet hakkındaki röportaj olan "Welcome to Compton" projesi ile "Canon Young Photographers Award" ödülünü kazandı

2008’de, Hindistan’da ekonomik ilerlemenin unuttuğu küçük bir bölge hakkındaki çalışması olan "Spirit of Shekhawati" Trento, Milan ve Roma’da sergiledi. Aynı yıl, yaratıcılık ve araştırma alanında ödül alan İtalyan yeteneklerin yıllık yarışmasının yer aldığı "Young Blood" yayınladı ve festivalde "Orvieto Fotografia" ödülünü kazandı.

2009’da Seul’da "New Italian Film & Art Festival”i sırasında “Insa Art Center”da ve "Cultural Interchange Between Korea and Italy” sırasında Incheon Catholic Universitesi’nde Rivus Galleri’de “Bodies for sale, Mumbai” adlı çalışmasını sergiledi ve “Abruzzo 2009” sergisine katıldı, Milan’da tiyatroda Nisan’da meydana gelen deprem hakkındaki “Dal Verme” açıldı ve sonra İtalya’yı geziyor.   

Yeni kitabı “TI MOUN YO, children of Haiti” sadece N.P.H. için ve Contrasto tarafından yayınlandı, Kasım’da Milan’da “Forma, Centro Internazionale di Fotografia” adlı sergi ile tanıtıldı.

Ayrıca, 2005, 2006, 2008 ve 2009’da IPA’da (International Photography Awards, Uluslararası Fotoğraf Ödülleri) çeşitli tasdik ödülleri aldı; 2006, 2008 ve 2009’da PX3  (Prix de la Photographie Paris) ve New York Photo Awards 2009’da diğer çeşitli ödüller; kollektif bir kitap olan “CHILDREN, moments of humanity” (2006) katkı ve Asia Unique (2008) adlı seri kitaplar. Ayrıca, 13×17padiglioneitalia” (travelling all around Italy since 2005), ”Scatti per Bene” (Sothebys, Milan, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008), “Convivio” (FieraMilanocity, Milan, 2008), “Male di Miele” (Wannabe Gallery, Milan, 2008) adlı çeşitli kollektif serilere de katıldı.

About Albertina d’Urso

Italian photographer Albertina d'Urso (Milan, 1976) studied at the ICP (International Center of Photography), at TPW (Toscana Photographic Workshops) and at the Agency VII. She is focused mainly in social and humanitarian reportages.

Her dedication to this kind of issues begun in 2004 when she went to Mumbai to help a charity: her work gave life to a book, Bombayslum, published by Skira, and an exhibition at Libreria degli Atellani in Milan and deeply changed her life and her career.

In 2006 she participated to the "Kabul mission of the municipality of Milan", a work aimed at showing the consequences of the war in Afghanistan and the efforts of the mission ISAF 8 and the Italian NGOs to restore the situation, culminated with the "Milano-Kabul no stop" exhibition in the Arcade Vittorio Emanuele and with two books: Respiro del Mondo 5 Afghanistan, Kabul, and Km 5072, Milano-Kabul no stop. 

In 2007 she was selected for "Focus on Monferrato Masterclass" a project that consist in 12 photographers, guided by Stanley Greene and Kadir van Lohuizen, to document different sides of life in Piedmont and won the "Canon Young Photographers Award" with her project "Welcome to Compton", a reportage about gangs and violence in Los Angeles. 

In 2008 she exhibited "Spirit of Shekhawati", a work about this small region of India forgotten by the economic boom, in Trento, Milan and Rome.. In the same year she was featured in "Young Blood", the annual contest of Italian talents who have recived international prizes in the creative and research fields and won an award at the festival "Orvieto Fotografia". 

In 2009 Albertina exhibited her work “Bodies for sale, Mumbai” in Insa Art Center in Seoul during the "New Italian Film & Art Festival" and in Rivus Gallery in Incheon Catholic University during the "Cultural Interchange Between Korea and Italy” and participated to the exhibition “Abruzzo 2009”, about the earthquake occurred in April, inaugurated in “Dal Verme” theater in Milan and than traveling around Italy.

Her new book “TI MOUN YO, children of Haiti” realized for the onlus N.P.H. and published by Contrasto, was presented in November with an exhibition in “Forma, Centro Internazionale di Fotografia” in Milan.

She also recived various recognitions at the IPA (International Photography Awards) in 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2009; the PX3  (Prix de la Photographie Paris) in 2006, 2008 and 2009, and was among the nominees for the New York Photo Awards 2009; contributed to collectives books as CHILDREN, moments of humanity (2006) and the series of books Asia Unique (2008). She also partecipated in several collectives exhibition including: “13×17padiglioneitalia” (travelling all around Italy since 2005),”Scatti per Bene” (Sothebys, Milan, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008), “Convivio” (FieraMilanocity, Milan, 2008), “Male di Miele” (Wannabe Gallery, Milan, 2008).
