30 yıldan fazladır sanat yönetmeni, grafik tasarımcısı ve yaratıcı yönetmen olarak profesyonel grafik tasarımı ve reklamcılık işindeyim. Tüm bu yıllar içinde, fotoğrafçılığı gerçekten sevdiğimi her zaman biliyordum. Honda otomobilden California Turizm Ofisi’ne kadar çeşitli müşteriler için olağanüstü görüntüler yaratan ama her zaman ticari fotoğrafçılığın üstüne çıkmak ve işlerini bir derece daha yükseltmek için gayret eden pek çok mükemmel ve yetenekli fotoğrafçıyla çalıştım. Ben kişisel işime bu estetik disiplinleri getirdim.
Eight Calla Lilies
Çalışma Hakkında
Doğanın bazı en farklı ve sessiz muhteşem ürünleri olan çiçekler sonsuz ayrıntı sunar ve görsel merakı uyandırırlar. Ara sıra, ölü yapraklar, dallar, hatta bir sebze pazarından kalan bir şeyler gibi bitki parçaları bulurum. (Kesinlikle sahip olduğum en tuhaf görüntülerden biri olan Rezene #6 gibi )
Fennel
Yakınlaştıkça daha çok şaşırırım. Bu görüntülerle tipik olanın ötesine ulaşıyorum ve olağandışı için, beklenmeyen için çaba harcıyorum. Bakış açısı ya da kendi başına bir tür olan. Doğa fotoğrafçılığının çoğu gibi bu bir keşiften daha çok, bir buluştur.
Five Callas
Oldukça küçük nesnelerin çok yakından çekimleri (bana lisedeki biyoloji derslerini hatırlatan) inanılmaz detay ve özellikleri gözler önüne serer. Gerçekte hiç de şaşırtıcı olmayan bu keşiflerin bazıları şaşırtıcıdır. Doğa bu aşamada sizi çok şaşırtır.
Protea
Önemsiz botanik ayrıntıları yakalayıp iletmekten daha çok, grafik şekiller ve yapıları da değerlendiriyorum. Bu görüntülerle çalışırken keskin ayrıntılar ve ilginç şekillerden daha fazlasını bulmak zorundayım. Beni görüntüye çeken fazladan bir şeyler olmalı. Bu bazen, sadece güzel bir doku olabilir –eski yıpranmış bir deri gibi- Beş zambakta olduğu gibi veya Orkide #6’daki gibi bir hareket ya da duruş fikri gibi ya da Amber çiçeği#1’deki gibi bir hareket veya davranış duygusu olabilir.

Hybiscus
Zerafetle yaşlanma bu görüntülerin pek çoğunda tekrar eden bir konu. Tüm hayat dolu çekiciliği ve gösterişiyle mükemmel bir çiçek enfes bir şeydir. Ama bir çiçek ya da bir yaprağın en güzel zamanı geçince başka bir zerafet durumuna geçer. Zerafetin azalması benim ilgimi daha çok çeker.

Bu fotoğraflar yatay bir tarayıcı kullanılarak çok yüksek çözünürlükte çekilmiştir. Bu, yalnızca inanılmaz detayları değil şaşırtıcı renk derinliğini de sağlar. Işık çok yumuşak ve onun kendi sadeliği içinde çok zarif ve daha keskin olan odak, aynı zamanda daha parlak ve daha yakın. Görüntüler yüksek çözünürlüklü olduğundan çok büyük baskı alabiliyorum. Tüm süreç baştan sona dijital bir işleyiş olsa da sadece son görüntüyü tamamen anlamak ve basmak için bir araçtır. Görüntüyü süslemek ya da tamamen değiştirmek için dijital efektler kullanmıyorum. Konu, gerçekte onu çektiğim gibidir.
Phalaenopsis
Hahnemuhle Alman gravür kağıda mürekkep baskılar, Culver City’de BowHaus tarafından üretilmiştir. Bu kağıt, bulduklarım içinde en koyu siyaha ulaşabilendi... Detay, dinamik çeşitlilik ve aşırı mat yüzeyin ton özellikleri geniş format profesyonel yazıcının yüksek çözünürlüğü ile birleşerek görüntüleri üç boyutlu niteliğe ulaştırıyor…
Camellia
Bu light jet baskılar Kodak Endura Metalik Kağıt üstüne basılmış ve kalın bir siyahla astarlanmıştır. Edura’nın ince metal özelliği, yüzeylerin inci kalitesindeki yarı saydamlığını ortaya çıkarır.
Cactus Blossom
Bu çalışmayı yapmayı sevdiğimi söylemek çok hafif kalır. Bu, benim hayatımda yeni bir yön. Önceleri, görüntüleri müşterilerim için ürettiğimde sıklıkla bütçe kısıtlamaları, zamanlama sorunları ya da kavramsal anlaşmazlıklarla karşılaşıyordum.
Şimdi kendim ve çalışmalarımı beğenenler için çalışıyorum ve çok daha mutluyum.

I have been in the professional graphic design and advertising business for over 30 years, as an art director, graphic designer and creative director. What I've always known all these years is that I truly love photography. I have worked with many excellent and gifted photographers creating thousands of marvelous images for a variety of clients, from Honda Automobiles to the California Office of Tourism, but always striving to transcend commercial photography and taking the work to a higher level. I’ve brought those aesthetic disciplines to my personal work.
About the Work
As some of nature’s most varied and quietly spectacular output, flowers provide endless detail and visual intrigue. On occasion, I’ll find other bits of vegetation such as dead leaves, or branches, or even something out of a vegetable market such as Fennel #6 (shown here) that is certainly one of the more bizarre images I have.
The closer I get, the more amazed I am. With these images, I reach beyond the typical and strive for the unusual…the unexpected—be it the point of view or the specimen itself. As with most natural photography, this is more discovery than invention.
Focusing on relatively small subjects, in extreme close up (which kind of reminds me of my biology class in high school) reveals incredible details and features. Some of these revelations are surprising if not truly astonishing. Many seem foreign, even other-worldly. Nature at this level can blow you away.
I try to capture and convey more than just botanical minutiae; I also appreciate the graphic form and structure. As I work with the images, I have to find more than just sharp detail and interesting forms. There must be something extra that draws me into the image. Sometimes its simply a wonderful texture, such as the old weathered leather-like qualities of Five Callas, or the suggestion of a gesture or pose as in Phalaenopsis #6 or a sense of motion and attitude as in Hybiscus #1.
Aging gracefully is a recurring theme in many of these images as well. The perfect flower, in all its perky glamour and exhibitionism, is a stunning thing. However a flower or a leaf past its prime is yet another state of grace. The elegance of decay is what intrigues me most.
About the Process
These images are captured at a very high resolution, utilizing a flatbed scanner. This provides not only incredible detail but astonishing color depth. The lighting is very soft and is most elegant in its simplicity and focus– that which is sharper is also brighter and closer. Because of the very high resolution of the images, I am able to print very large. You can see the enlargened detail with the two pictures here: “Detail from Five Callas” and “Detail from Camellia”. Though the entire process from beginning to end, is a digital workflow, and is only a means to fully realize the final image and the print. I do not use digital effects to embellish or substantially change the image. The subject is essentially as I captured it.
The inkjet prints are produced by BowHaus in Culver City, printing on Hahnemuhle German Etching Paper. I find this paper achieves the deepest black of any paper I’ve found. The detail, dynamic range, and tonal characteristics of the ultra matte surface combined with the high definition of the large format professional printer enhances the three dimensional qualities of the images.
I have also done prints that are face mounted to ¼ in. Plexiglas. These Light Jet prints are done on Kodak Endura Metallic Paper and backed with a thick black. The subtle metallic characteristic of the Edura, brings out the translucent, pearl-like qualities of the surfaces.
To say I love doing this work is a huge understatement. It is a new direction in my life. Before, when we created images for my clients, it was as often as not a compromise with budget restraints, timing problems or conceptual disagreements.
Now I do the work for myself and if others enjoy it as well, then I’m happier still.
