Fotoğrafçılığa nasıl başladınız?

Fotoğrafçılıkla ilk kez, 2002 yazında bana bir bas-çek makine verildiğinde ciddi olarak  ilgilenmeye başladım.Bana göre bu, dijitalin gücü ile fotoğraflarımdaki hataları hemen görmeme imkan sağlayan tam bir keşifti. Fotoğrafların banyosu için beklemek ve deklanşöre basarken aklımda olan şeyi unutmak yoktu.

Bir kaç ay içinde beni mutlu eden sonuçları alıyordum fakat  şu anda istediğim gibi olan pozlamayı kontrol edemiyordum. Böylelikle bana dünyada her gün gördüğüm güzellikleri yakalamam için daha fazla kontrol sağlayan bir Fuji S602’ye geçtim.

Daha sonra ne oldu?
 

Bir iyimserlik anımda, sergi için önceden bir yıl boşluk ayırdım ve yerel doğal alanlarımızı  belgelemek için de  bir yıl planladım. Dürüst olmak gerekirse kendim için ne kadar büyük bir iş yaptığım hakkında bir bilgim yoktu.Arazi, seçmiş olabildiğim en  fotojenik yer değildi öyleyse ben gerçekten orda olanların fotoğrafını çekmekten daha çok, şekilleri yaratmayı kendi kendime öğretmek zorundaydım .Sergi iyi gitti ve prim olarak halka bazı satışlar yaptım.O zamandan beri daha çok fotoğraf,daha çok malzeme, daha çok sergi ve daha çok satış söz konusu.

2006’da İngiltere’nin güneydoğusunda bulunan ve manzara fotoğrafçılarına rehberlik eden bir grup olan  Işıkla Boyama Topluluğu’na davet edildim. http://www.painterswithlight.com/ Aynı zamanda e-Fotoğraf dergisi olan ePhotozine.com’un bölgeler kısım editörüyüm.

Fotoğrafçılığın hangi alanları ile ilgilisiniz?

Asıl ilgi alanım kara ve şehir manzaraları ile soyut işlerdir.

İngiliz manzaraları ve doğası ilk aşkımdır.Sabahın ilk ışıklarında İngiliz taşralarının büyük kısmı bazen yakalaması güç olan büyülü bir  niteliktedir ama bunu yapmaya değer. Dünyayı gezmiş kişiler “Bu İngiltere mi?” diye sorduklarında işimle her zaman gurur duyuyorum. İnsanlara onların eşiklerinde yer alan sihiri gösterebilmek çok harika bir şey.

Şehir manzaraları benim için nispeten daha yeni bir alan. Londra’ya çok yakın bir yerde yaşıyorum ama benim favori yerlerimden biri değildir.Kendimi taşrada,kalabalık bir şehirden daha fazla evimde hissediyorum.Bununla birlikte kalabalık şehir sokaklarını ve mimarisini  fotoğraflamayı ilgi çekici buluyorum.

Soyut, benim gerçek aşkım. Çok zor olsa da yapmaya değer buluyorum.Hem Londra hem soyut imajlar “aktif görme” olarak adlandırdığım bir süreci içerirler.Bu, bir sahneye sadece pasif olarak bakmayı değil , olağan sahneleri bile mümkün olan tüm açılardan sürekli olarak değerlendirerek bir kompozisyon oluşturmayı kapsar. Gerçekte sizin çektiğiniz yeri temsil etse de sadece olanı gösteren bir fotoğraf üretmek önemli değildir.

Şekillerinizi oluştururken photoshopu ne kadar kullanıyorsunuz?

Dijital fotoğrafçılığa başladığımda her zaman cezbedici olan , kötü bir fotoğrafı photoshopta pek çok şey yaparak  “kurtarmak”tı. Daha sonra bunu ruhsuz bir süreç olarak hissettiğim için bıraktım ve her zaman yapmayı istediğim şey kağıtta ya da ekranda gördüğümü sunmaktır.Bugünlerde raw dönüştürücüde elde edilen şeylerden kendimi kısıtlıyorum sadece lekeden(arasıra kolanın da sebep olabildiği lekelerden) arındırmak için clone aracını kullanıyorum.

Zaman zaman , gerçekliğin , tek bir çekimle de yapabileceğimden daha iyi bir sunumunu elde etmek için HDR araçlarını kullanıyorum ama pek çok HDR kullanıcısının benimsediği “karikatür” stilinin fanatiği değilim. Bana göre  fotoğraf,  çekimi her zaman iki boyutta yansıtmalı;  özel bir zamanda ve yerde...

Pek çok diğer fotoğrafçı gibi satış yapabilmek için  kendi internet sitemi oluşturdum :  www.shepherdpics.com Geçen yıl, İngiltere’de fotoğraf çekmekle ilgili çeşitli postalar ve çeşitli yazılım paketleri ile ipuçları ve hileler içeren bir blog ekledim.Günde 100 ziyaretçisi ile umduğumdan daha başarılı oldu.

Hangi ekipmanları kullanıyorsunuz?

İyi bir kamera ve daha büyük lensler vs. ye sahipsen mükemmel fotoğrafı çekebilirsin düşüncesine inanmak çok kolay olduğundan teknolojiden fazla etkilenmemeye çalışıyorum. Esas makinem, ihtiyaçlarıma kusursuzca cevap verebilen Canon 20D’dir.Bazı açılardan  full-frame (36x24mm) ye geçmek istiyorum ama 1D modelini daha hacimli buluyorum. Eğer Canon 5D’yi yenilerse gerçekten ilgileneceğim.

En son oyuncağım, Londra’da kullanmaya daha uygun, tam boyutlu bir DSLR’den daha az dikkat çekici küçük boyutu ile bir Canon Powershot G9.

How did you start in photography?

I first became seriously interested in photography when I was given a digital point & shoot in the summer of 2002.  To me this was a complete revelation, the power of digital immediately allowed me to see my pictures and mistakes.  No more waiting for pictures to be developed and forgetting what it was I had in mind when I pressed the shutter release.

Within a few months I was producing results I was happy with, but wasn’t able to control exposure as much as I would now wish.  So I then upgraded to a Fuji S602 which gave me plenty of control and allowed me to capture the beauty I saw in the world everyday.

 

So what happened next?

 

In a fit of optimism I booked an exhibition space a year in advance and planned to document a year in the life of our local nature reserve.  To be honest I didn’t have a clue how big a job I had made for myself.  The reserve is not the most photogenic place I could have chosen, so I really had to teach myself how to create images rather than just snapping what was there.  The exhibition went well and I as a bonus, I also made some sales to the public.  Since then it has been a case of more photos, more equipment, more exhibitions and more sales.

In 2006 I was invited to join The Painting with Light Society http://www.painterswithlight.com/ – a group of leading Landscape photographers based in the South East of England.  I am also the locations section editor for the online photography magazine ePhotozine.com

 

What areas of photography are you interested in?

 

My main areas of interest are Land/Cityscapes and Abstract work.

 

The British Landscape and its nature, is my first love.  In the early morning light, much of the British countryside has a magical quality that is sometimes difficult to capture; but very rewarding when you do.  I always feel a sense of pride in my work when people who have travelled all over the world ask “is that Britain?” – Its great to be able to show people the magic that is on their doorstep.

 

Cityscapes are a relatively new area of work for me.  I live very close to London but it’s not one of my favourite places.  I am much more at home in the countryside than a busy city. However, I find it extremely challenging to find and produce good images of the busy city streets and architecture. 

Abstracts are a real love of mine, they can be difficult yet I also find them to be very rewarding images to produce.  Both the London and abstract images involve a process I call “Active seeing”.  This involves not just passively looking at a scene, but constantly evaluating even the most mundane scene from all possible angles, to find a composition that works as a stand alone image. Whether it actually represents the place you took the shot is not as important as producing an image that works on its own.

 

Does Photoshop play a large part in your image production?

 

When I first started digital photography the temptation was always to “rescue” a bad image by doing lots of work on it in Photoshop.  I soon stopped doing this as it felt like a rather soul-less process and all I had ever wanted to do was render what I had seen on to paper or screen.  These days I pretty much limit myself to what comes off the raw converter,  just using the clone tool to get rid of dust spots and the occasional coke can!

 

I will occasionally use HDR (High Dynamic Range) tools to get a better representation of reality than I could do with a single shot but I am no fan of the “cartoon” style that many HDR users adopt.  For me a photograph should always represent the capture, in two dimensions, of a specific time and place.

 

Tell us about your website?

 

Like many other photographers I created my own website: www.shepherdpics.com as a shop window for my images.  Last year I added a blog to it which contains various posts on taking pictures in the UK and tips and tricks with various software packages.  It has been far more successful then I expected with 100s of people visiting every day to read it.

 

What equipment do you use?

 

I try not to get too obsessed by the technology, as it is easy to get into the belief that you would get the perfect shot if only you had a better camera/ bigger lens, etc.  My main camera is a Canon 20D which produces images that are perfectly adequate for my needs.  At some point I would like to upgrade to full-frame but I find the 1D models too bulky so when Canon produce a 5D replacement I’ll be really interested.

 

My latest toy is a Canon Powershot G9 which is superb for using in London as its small size attracts a lot less attention than a full-size DSLR .
