Fotoğrafa olan ilgim, 18 yaşında iken,  1966 yılında Birleşik Devletler Deniz Filosu’na katıldığım zaman başladı. Ansel Adams ve Morley Baer’in düzenlediği ve fotoğrafa olan tutkumu daha da körükleyen atölyelere katıldım. Zaman içerisindeki bir an’ı yakalama fikri beni büyülemişti ve 43 yıldır halen devam etmekte. O zamanlar, beynin sol tarafı, sağ tarafının neyi neden yaptığını tanımlamaya başladığında, hedeflenen her zamanın hedeften şaştığını anladım... 

 

Karanlık Aynadaki Yansımalar

15 fotoğraf, Karanlık Aynadaki Yansımalar adını verdiğim 40 fotoğraflık bir portfolyodandır. Görüntüler mecazi ve kişisel orijinal fikirlerdir. Hayallerimde ve korkularımda gizlendiklerini bildiğim o gölgeli anları ölçmeye yardımcı olan zamana ait unsurları ve tecrübeleri kullandım. Bazıları efsaneler ve masallardan,  bazıları ise cevaplanmamış sorulardan alınmıştır.

Herhangi başka birinin onları nasıl yorumladığı ve anladığı tamamen onların kendi kişisel deneyimlerinden etkilenmelerine bağlıdır. İzleyicinin algıları, benimkinden daha az ya da daha çok doğru değildir.

Fotoğrafçılığımla ilgili sadece şunu söyleyebilirim: Uzun zaman önce,  bana daha fazla şey ifade eden fotoğraflarla duygusal bir bağ kurduğumu öğrendim. Konu ister bir kuş, bir tuğla duvar ya da bir çapa olsun o, benim görüntülere hayat ve hareket veren duygusal ve entelektüel olmayan cevabımdır. Hepimizin sanata entelektüel bir cevabımız vardır ama o;  bir resme, heykele ya da fotoğrafa  bakarken ruhumuzun derinliklerinde yandığını hissettiğimiz duygulardır. Sanat, duygular olmaksızın matematiktir.

I first became interested in photography in 1966, at the age of 18, when I went into the United States Marine Corps. I attended workshops taught by Ansel Adams and Morley Baer, fueling my interest into passion. The idea of capturing a moment in time fascinated me and has continued to do so for the last 43 years. In that time, I have come to understand that whenever the left side of the brain attempts to describe what the right side does and why, it will, as a rule, completely miss its mark. 

 

On Reflections in a Dark Mirror

The fifteen photographs included are from a portfolio of forty images I call Reflections in a Dark Mirror. The images are metaphors and personal archetypes. I have used elements of time and experience to help quantify those shadowy moments, when I think I know what lurks in my imagination and fears. Some are taken from myth and fiction others from unanswered questions. 

How anyone else interprets and comes to understand them is entirely dictated by their own personal experience. The viewer’s perceptions are no more or less valid than mine.

With regard to my photography, I can only say this: I have long since learned that the images that meant the most to me were the ones with which I had an emotional connection.  Whether the subject was a flower, a brick wall, or an anchor it was my emotional and not my intellectual response to it that led to images that felt both alive and dynamic.   We all have an intellectual response to art but it is the emotions we feel when viewing a painting, sculpture or photograph that burns the deepest within our psyche.  Art without emotions is mathematics.
