MARAMURES Folk Culture on Europe's Eastern Fringe

Son sekiz yıldır, Avrupa’daki en geleneksel kırsal yaşamının var olduğu Kuzey Romanya’nın Maramures bölgesinin fotoğraflarını çektim. 2003’de Valeni adlı küçük bir köyde bir aile ile birlikte 10 ay yaşadım ve çiftçilik yaptım. Ve yıllarca köylüler arasında edindiğim tecrübeler, yaşamımın en önemli noktalarını oluşturmaktadır. 2007 Ocak ayında Romanya Avrupa Birliği’ne katıldı ve katı AB tarım standartları şimdi yüzlerce yıllık eski yaşam şartlarını tehdit ediyor. Ben şahsen, sonsuza dek yok olmadan evvel bu büyülü ve huzur dolu yerin ve onu fotoğraflamanın tadını çıkarmak istiyorum.

 Ukrayna sınırı yakınındaki cennet gibi dört vadiye yayılmış 30 kusür köyde yaşam hala mevsimler etrafında dönmektedir. Tarım makineleşmemiştir ve tırpanla ve tahta saman tırmıkları ile koni gibi şekillendirilmiş saman yığınları erik ve elma ağaçlarıyla kaplı tepelerden yuvarlanır.  Pek çok evde hala su akmıyor. Gelenekler ve köy yaşamının baskın olduğu Roman Ortodoks törenlerinin detayları ile halk kostümleri, Avrupa’nın hiç bir yerinde bu kadar güçlü şekilde sürdürülmemektedir.

Gittiğim her yerde erik konyağı içmeye davet ediliyordum, saman yığını taşıyan at arabaları üstünde giderken elleri ile işaret ederek düğünler ve halk festivallerine çağrılıyordum. Bana eski bir dostları gibi davranılıyordu ve Maramures insanlarının Batı standartlarına göre fakir olmalarına rağmen fakirlikten uzak olduklarını anladım. Onlar basit şeylerle yaşamdan zevk alıyorlar ve güçlü toplumsal bağları var.

21.yüzyıl dünyası onların tarımsal geçmişlerinden kat be kat ileriye gidiyor. Gelecek yıllarda toprağa derinden bağlı muhteşem yaşam şeklinde AB üyeliğinin etkileri ile dönüşüm olacak ve ben küreselleşme yolunda devam eden bu yürüyüşün hepimiz için ne ifade edeceğini merak ediyorum.

I have photographed in the Maramures region of northern Romania, home to the most traditional rural life in Europe, for the past eight years. In 2003, I lived and farmed with a family for 10 months in the small village of Valeni and my experiences amongst the peasants over the years, have been the high points of my life. In January 2007, Romania joined the European Union and strict EU agricultural standards now threaten the centuries-old way of life. I want to personally savor this magical, peaceful place before it vanishes forever and the act of photographing has offered me a way to do so.

Life in the thirty-odd villages that lie scattered along four idyllic valleys near the Ukraine border still revolves around the seasons. Farming is non-mechanized and cone shaped haystacks made with scythes and wooden pitchforks dot rolling hills lined with plum and apple trees. Most houses are still without running water. Nowhere else in Europe do folk costumes persist so strongly with elaborate traditions and Romanian Orthodox ceremonies dominating village life.

Welcomed into homes wherever I went for toasts of plum brandy, onto horse carts fetching haystacks, and beckoned to weddings and folk festivals, I was treated as an old friend and realized that the peasants of Maramures, though poor by Western standards, are far from impoverished; they enjoy a life full of simple pleasures and a strong communal bond.

The 21st century world is moving further and further away from its agrarian past. In the coming years a spectacular way of life that is intimately connected to the land will be transformed by the effects of EU membership and I wonder what this continued march towards globalization will mean for all of us?

Davin, okuldaki yoksul Roman çocuklarına yardım etmek için Leslie Hawks’ın Ovidiu Rom gibi çeşitli sivil toplum kuruluşları ile çalışmaktadır.

Bulgaristan’daki The Phodar Fotoğrafçılık Bienali 2009 Portfolyo Ödülü’nü kazanmıştır. Aynı zamanda Jen Bekman’ın Hey! Hot Shot Yarışması’nda hem 2008 hem de 2009’da mansiyon ve Amerikan Photography 23’de onur nişanı ve Carleton Üniversitesi’nden İsviçre’de fotoğraf için Larson Bursunu kazanmıştır. 2008’de PDN’s 30 ve Dünya Basın Fotoğrafı Joop Swart Masterclass için aday gösterilmiştir.

Çalışmaları son olarak, dünyadan 132 fotoğrafçının 20 Ocak 2009’da “umut”u yakalamak için organize ettiği Courrier Japon projesi “Değişimin Bugünü”nün yayınlanması vesilesiyle Tokyo’da ve Bulgaristan Plevne’de Photar Fotoğrafçılık Bienali’nde sergilenmektedir

Photographer Davin Ellicson studied Modern European History at Carleton College in Minnesota before moving to live and farm in a small village with peasants for a year in the Maramures region of northern Romania, home to the most traditional rural life left in Europe. In 2006, he completed an MA in Photojournalism and Documentary Photography at The London College of Communication and then moved to Bucharest to pursue stories throughout the Balkans.

Davin has completed assignments for such publications as The International Herald Tribune, The Chronicle of Higher Education, Courrier Japon, Bloomberg News and Intermediair Magazine and his work has appeared in The New York Times, Der Spiegel, TAZ, Die Presse, and the books ‘East’ and ‘This Day of Change’ which was recently nominated for a Lucie Award. Davin also works with various NGOs in Romania including Leslie Hawke's Ovidiu Rom which seeks to help put impoverished Roma children in school.

The recipient of the 2009 Portfolio Award at The Phodar Photography Biennial in Bulgaria, he has also won an honorable mention in Jen Bekman's Hey! Hot Shot Contest in both 2008 and 2009, honors in American Photography 23 and a Larson Fellowship to photograph in Sweden from Carleton College. In 2008, Davin was nominated for PDN's 30 and World Press Photo's Joop Swart Masterclass.

His work has recently been exhibited in Tokyo on the occasion of the publication of the Courrier Japon project 'This Day of Change' which organized 132 photographers from around the world to capture 'hope' on 20 January 2009, and also in Pleven, Bulgaria at The Phodar Photography Biennial.
