1974’te Hindistan’da Mukaddes Dalai Lama ile tanıştığımdan beri Tibet kültürünün fotoğraflarını çekiyorum. 1990’larda uzatılmış 3 seyahat sırasında, 8x10 kamera ile Tibet’e gittim ve 50 yıllık Çin baskısı sonrasındaki yaşamı detaylandırmaya başladım. Bu fotoğraflar sessiz Tibet yaşam tarzını anlatır. Çin’in Tibet ruhunu delme denemelerine rağmen o hala, materyalist Çin istilacılarının anlayamayacağı şekilde görkemli bir yer olmaya devam eder.

Tibet’e yaptığım pek çok ziyaret dışında Moğolistan, Rusya, Ukrayna, Polonya, Küba, Kosova, Bosna, Nepal ve Hindistan’da da bazı projeler üzerinde çalıştım. Ben, bir haber fotoğrafçısı değilim. Savaştan ve diğer felaketlerden uzak durmayı tercih ediyorum ama sorunların kötü sonuçlarıyla yüzleşmek için gayret gösteririm, sosyal refah ya da sıkıntıların görsel kayıtlarını ararım. Belirsiz koşullar içindeki bireylerin güzelliklerini araştırırım.

Birleşik Devletlerde Massachusetts’de yaşıyorum ve Holyoke Yüksekokulu Görsel Sanatlar Bölümü’nde fotoğrafçılık profesörüyüm.

Portraits from Tibet

I have been photographing Tibetan culture since I met His Holiness the Dalai Lama in India in 1974.  During three extended trips in the 1990s, I went to Tibet with an 8X10 view camera and began detailing life after fifty years of Chinese suppression. These pictures are meant to celebrate the survival of the nonviolent Tibetan way of life.  In spite of the Chinese attempts to hollow out the soul of Tibet, it continues to be a majestic land that retains a power incomprehensible to the materialistic Chinese invaders. 

In addition to several trips to Tibet, I have worked on projects in Mongolia, Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Cuba, Kosovo, Bosnia, Nepal and India.  I am not a photojournalist.  I prefer to avoid war and other disasters, but I make an effort to face trouble’s aftermath and look for visual notations of social well-being or distress.  I search for the beauty of individuals within the uncertainty of circumstances.  

I live in Massachusetts, USA and am a professor of photography in the Department of Visual Arts at Holyoke Community College.
