Jan von Holleben’in fotoğrafları bir köpeğin sırtında çölü geçerek ya da okyanusun dibindeki kayıp hazineleri arayarak nostaljik rüyaları gerçekleştirir.
Jan’ın görüntü yönetmeni ve çocuk terapisti olan anne babasının etkilerini çalışmasında görebiliriz. “Çocuk Tarihi” ve “Oyun oynama” temalarındaki görsel çocukluk sunumunun odağı, kurs hocasından gelmektedir: O, bu teorileri kişisel deneyimleri ve çocukluk anıları ile birleştirir. Klasik çocuk kitaplarının yanı sıra modern süper kahramanlardan da esinlenerek 2002’den beri Güneybatı Almanya’daki mahallesindeki çocuklarla “Uçma Rüyaları”nı üretiyor ve halen devam ediyor!
“Dünyalara hükmediyordum. Sadece bir taneye değil pek çoğuna. Onları aynalar ve objektiflerle çizdim. Onları ışık, gölge ve zaman ile çizdim. Bazen bir göz yanıltmasıyla çizdim. Kameramla bütün evren şekil aldı ve onun içindeki her bir dünya, bir çeşit sihirli saat gibi alışılmadık bir mantık tarafından çalıştırılıyormuş gibi görünüyordu.”
1977 yılında Köln’de dünyaya gelen ve Güney Almanya kırsalında yetişen Jan von Holleben, gençliğinin büyük bölümünü alternatif bir komünde yaşamıştır ve fotografik çalışmalarının gelişimi ile görüntü yönetmeni ve çocuk terapisti olan anne-babasının etkisi arasında güçlü bir bağ kurmaktadır. 13 yaşındayken bir makina alıp arkadaşları ve ailesiyle her türlü sihirli hileyi deneyerek, fotoğraf hayallerini ve becerilerini geliştirerek ve daha sonra tekniğini ticari ortamlarda keskinleştirerek babasının fotoğraf kariyerini takip etmiştir. Freiburg’daki Pädagogische Hochschule’daki engelli çocuklara eğitim verme çalışmalarından sonra Londra’ya taşınmış, Surrey Sanat ve Tasarım Enstitüsü'nde Fotoğraf Teorisi ve Tarihi diploması almıştır. Londra fotoğraf sahnesine resim editörü, sanat yönetmeni ve fotoğraf direktörü olarak dalmıştır. Hızla iki fotoğraf topluluğu kurmuştur: Genç Fotoğrafçılar Birliği ve Photodebut. Yakın zamanda da Fotoğrafçı Ofisi. “Oynayan İnsanlar” üzerine odaklanan fotoğraf çalışmaları; kendini öğrenişi (insan oyun aracılığıyla öğrenir), kendi kişisel oyun tecrübeleri ve çocukluk anıları ile pedagojik teorinin eğlenceli entegrasyonundan oluşmuştur.
Jan von Holloben’in çalışması uluslararası olarak sergilenmiş ve dünya çapında yayınlanmıştır.
En sevdiği işbirlikçileri; arkadaşları ve korsanlar, periler, ejderhalar, canavarlar ve serserilerdir. Ayrıca bazı küçük bulutlar arkasındaki güneş, Zeit Magazin, Neon Magazine Dazed&Confused, Geo and Steidl Publishers.
Kupalar dolusu yeşil çay, Bircher Müsli, renkli çoraplar ve spor ayakkabılar, bisikleti ve dağlarda yürümeyi çok sever. Yo yo yo!

Crossing the desert on the back of a dog or searching for lost treasures on the bottom of the ocean, Jan von Holleben’s photographs make nostalgic dreams come true.
Jan brings the influences of his parents – a cinematographer and child therapist – to his work. His focus on the visual representation of childhood, ‘Child-History’ and concepts of ‘Playing’, come from his teacher training coursework: he combines these theories with his personal experience and childhood memories. Inspired by classic childhood books as well as modern superheroes, he has produced ‘Dreams of Flying’ since 2002 with children from his local neighbourhood in Southwest Germany – ongoing!
“I once ruled the worlds. Not just one, but many. I ruled them with mirrors and lenses. I ruled them with light and shadow and time. Sometimes I ruled with a trick of the eye. Through my camera, an entire cosmos took shape, and each world within it seemed to operate by a certain unfamiliar logic, like a sort of magical clockwork.”
Born in 1977 in Cologne and brought up in the southern German countryside, Jan von Holleben lived most of his youth in an alternative commune and identifies a strong connection between the development of his photographic work and the influence of his parents, a cinematographer and child therapist. At the age of 13, he followed his father’s photographic career by picking up a camera and experimenting with all sorts of „magical tricks“, developing his photographic imagination and skills with friends and family and later honing his technique in commercial settings. After pursuing studies in teaching children with disabilities at the Pädagogische Hochschule in Freiburg, he moved to London, earned a degree in the Theory and History of Photography at Surrey Institute of Art and Design, and became submerged within the London photographic scene, where he worked as picture editor, art director and photographic director. He quickly set up two photographic collectives, Young Photographers United and photodebut, followed more recently by the Photographer’s Office. His body of photographic work focusing on the ‘homo ludens’ – the man who learns through play, is itself built from a playful integration of pedagogical theory with his own personal experiences of play and memories of childhood.
Jan von Holleben’s work has been exhibited internationally and published widely throughout the world.
His favourite collaborators are: his friends and any pirates, fairies, dragons, monsters and punks that are about. Also the sun behind some tiny clouds, Zeit Magazin, Neon Magazine Dazed&Confused, Geo and Steidl Publishers.
Otherwise he greatly fancies loads of cups of green tea, Bircher Müsli, colourful socks & sneakers, his bike and walking in the mountains, Yo yo yo!
