Canada’s stock exchanges are the world leaders in mine finance and development, built by the profits and corporations which evolved from the mines in the provinces of Quebec and Ontario. This region is home to some of the world’s deepest and largest underground mines and smelters. Many of the communities surrounding the mines have given rise to some of the most militant labour unions in North American history.
This body of work examines life in Canada’s geologically rich hard rock mining belt in Northern Ontario and Quebec. The photographs are documents of the people, land and work involved in underground mining and smelting.
As the son of immigrant labourers, I have always been fascinated by the politics of work and commerce. By examining the social issues surrounding workers and market economies, we gain a clearer understanding of the symbiotic nature of the global economy we all participate in.

Louie PALU Hakkında
Louie Palu, 18 yıl belgesel fotoğrafçı olarak çalışmıştır. 1991’de Ontario Sanat Koleji’nden mezun olmuştur. 1991’de, Kafesteki Çığlık adlı madencilerin çalışmalarını belgeleyen 12 yıllık bir projeye başlamıştır. (2005’de Critical Mass Book ödülünü kazanan Sert Kaya Madenciliği Bölgesi’ndeki Yaşam ve Ölüm.)
Louie’nin çalışması; pek çok yayında ,Perpignan Visa Pour L'Image Fotomuhabirliği Festivali ile Fransa’da 5 defa, Almanya’da Mannheim / Ludwigshafen’de Internationale Fototage’de, Çin’de, Ping Yao Festival’inde Geroge Eastman House’da, Roma Uluslararası Fotoğraf Festivali’nde, Fransa Arles’de Voies Off Fringe Festival’inde, İsviçre’de Stockholm Fotoğraf Merkezi gibi pek çok festivallerde ve Rusya, Portekiz,Brezilya gibi pek çok uluslarası sergide yer aldı.
Louie, Hasselblad Usta Ödülü ve 2008 En İyi Fotomuhabirliği Ödülü, Fotoğrafçılık Gazete Tasarımı Topluluğu’ndan gümüş ödül gibi pek çok ödül kazanmıştır. Afganistan’daki 3 yılı aşkın savaş ve Guantanamo Körfezi’ndeki hapishane gibi dünya çapındaki pek çok olay ile kapak oldu. Çalışması The New Yorker, Newsweek , Atlantic Monthly, The Washington Post, Forbes, USA Today, NPR ve The Globe and Mail gibi pek çok baskı ve internet yayınında yer aldı.

Louie Palu has worked as a documentary photographer for 18 years. He graduated from the Ontario College of Art in
Louie's work has appeared in numerous publications, festivals and exhibitions internationally, which includes being selected for the photojournalism festival Visa Pour L'Image in Perpignan, France five times, Internationale Fototage in Mannheim / Ludwigshafen in Germany, George Eastman House, Ping Yao Festival in China, Fotografia International Festival of Rome, Voies Off Fringe Festival in Arles, France, Centrum for Fotografi in Stockholm, Sweden, including exhibitions in Russia, Portugal and Brazil.
Louie is the recipient of numerous awards including a Hasselblad Master Award and a Best of Photojournalism Award in 2008, including a Silver Medal from the Society of Newspaper Design for photography. He has covered numerous issues throughout the world including the war in Afghanistan over the past three years and the detention facility in Guantanamo Bay. His work has appeared in numerous print and web publications including The New Yorker, Newsweek, Atlantic Monthly, The Washington Post, Forbes, USA Today, NPR and The Globe and Mail.
