Yeni bir fotoğraf hikayesi planlama

Her zaman, yayıncılarla sözleşme yaptıklarımın yanısıra kişisel bir kitap projesi deniyor ve devam ettiriyorum (şu anda 120 kitabım yayınlanmış ve büyük olasılıkla bu zaten çok sayıda kitap) En sonuncusu, bu yılın başında yayınlanan ve Çin’in güneybatısından Tibet’e kadar eski dünyanın çay taşınan en uzun ticaret yollarından biri olan Tea Horse Yolu ile ilgili olan kitaptı. Bunu gerçekleştirmek iki yılımı aldı (kendimi bu işe vermek için yetecek kadar zaman) Şimdi, bir sonraki büyük projeme bakıyorum ve bir süredir, Sudan ile ilgili kitabı birlikte  yaptığım arkadaşlarımla bunun hakkında konuşuyorum. “Su” hakkında ve başlık “Su Savaşları” ama bu öyle büyük bir konu ki  esas mesele idare edilebilir oranlara ayırabilmek. Yani fotoğraf için idare edilebilir…

Bu projeyi çekmeye başlamamdan bugüne kadarki mümkün olan görüntüleri bir araya getiriyorum. Burada kısa bir seçme var. Tüm bunların bir kitaba dönüşeceğinden emin değilim. Gördüğünüz gibi su, lirikten sosyal belgesele pek çok yönde ele alınabilir. Sonuçta bu bir kaynak hikaye olacak ama onu röportajın yanısıra, duygusal ve görsel düzeyde de yapılandırmak gerektiğinin bilincindeyim.

Planning a new photo story

I always try and keep one personal book project going, in addition to all the others I’m contracted to do with publishers (right now, I have my 120th book published, and that’s probably too many books already!). The most recent was Tea Horse Road, published at the beginning of this year, about one of the longest trade routes in the ancient world, carrying tea from the far southwest of China to Tibet. It took over two years to do - enough time to get my teeth into it. Now I’m looking for the next big project, and in fact I’ve been talking about this for some time with the friends with whom I did the book before last, on Sudan. It’s water,, and the working title is Water Wars, but it’s such a huge subject that the real issue is defining it into manageable proportions. Manageable for photography, that is.

To date, I’m assembling possible images from past shooting, while beginning shooting intended for this project. Here is a short selection. I’m by no means certain that all of these will make it into the book. As you see, water can be handled in so many ways, from lyrical to social documentary. Ultimately it will be a resource story, but I’m conscious that we have to structure it in such a way that there’s both an emotional and visual level, in addition to the reportage treatment.

Michael Freeman was born in England in 1945, studied at Brasenose College, Oxford University, where he has a Masters Degree in Geography, and then worked in advertising in London for six years. In 1971 he made the break from advertising to travel up the Amazon. The resulting pictures were used extensively by Time-Life Books for the first book in the series The World's Wild Places - on the cover and throughout The Amazon volume. With the encouragement of Time-Life (his first client), Freeman began a full-time photographic career in 1973.

A leading photographer for the Smithsonian Magazine for three decades, Freeman's work has been widely published internationally in all major magazines, including GEO, the Sunday Times Magazine, Smithsonian, Life, International Wildlife, Stern, Paris-Match, the Telegraph Magazine, the Observer, the Independent, Design Magazine, GQ Magazine, National Geographic, Omni, Condé Nast Traveler, Illustrated London News, Merian, Newsweek, Asahi Shimbum among many others.

Following a book assignment for Time-Life (Wayfarers of the Thai Forest for the Peoples of the Wild series), he has made a speciality of Southeast and East Asia, making frequent trips to the region from his London base. In 1990, Houghton Mifflin in the United States published his book on Cambodia, Angkor: The Hidden Glories ("An invaluable, breathtakingly beautiful record", Publishers Weekly; "A remarkable book, a superb evocation", Wall Street Journal) - the first on the temples in more than 20 years. Following this, he worked for two years on Palaces of the Gods, published by River Books in 1992 ("gives total pleasure in every respect", Literary Review), subsequently on Ancient Capitals of Thailand (Thames & Hudson, 1995) and Palaces of Bangkok (Thames & Hudson, 1996). There followed four more books on Angkor, including Angkor: Cities and Temples (Thames & Hudson 1997) and Ancient Angkor (River Books 1999). Spirit of Asia (Thames & Hudson 2000) is a photographic journey to the sacred sites of the continent. 

In 2005 he published a major photographic book, the 336-page Sudan: Land and People (Thames & Hudson), which has received the following reviews: "This superb story of the Sudan does everything. Michael Freeman's photographs portray both the glory and the grimness of this huge and tantalising country." (William Shawcross, author of 'Sideshow') "This magnificent book .... gives the country a face - irresistible, photogenic, bewitching and profoundly human." His latest large work of documentary reportage photography is Tea Horse Road, published in January 2011. This 340-page book took two years to photograph, and covers one of the longest trade routes in the ancient world, between southwest China and Tibet, carrying tea in one direction and war horses in the other, from the 7th century to the middle of the 20th.
