Bize kendiniz ve fotoğraf yolculuğunuzla ilgili olarak biraz bilgi verebilir misiniz?

İsmim Miguel Angel de Arriba. 44 yaşındayım. İspanya’nın kuzeyinde, Cantabria sahilinde küçük bir kasaba olan Liencres’de yaşıyorum. Fotoğrafa 20 yıldan daha fazla zamandır ilgi duyuyorum ve önce bir öğrenci olarak sonra da işimde kendimi fotoğrafa adadım.

Bir süre kendimi fotoğrafçılıktan uzak tuttum ve dijital multimedya devriminden sonra tekrar fotoğrafçılığa odaklandım. Geçinmek için fotoğrafçılık yapıyorum. Pek çok ödül kazandım ve birçok sergi açtım.

Hangi sanatçıları seversiniz? Kim size ilham verir?

Hayran olduğum pek çok fotoğrafçı var, hepsi de kendi tarzına sahip: Cartier Bresson, Brassai, Avedon, James Natchwey, Steve McCurry, Steve Bloom, Erwin Olaff, Chema Madoz, Ramon Masats... Bu uzun bir liste ve onların herbiri özel bir bakış açısına sahip. Bu, benim gibi onların işlerinden hoşlanan herkes için kesinlikle bir yetiştirmedir.

Bize tekniğiniz hakkında kısaca bilgi verebilir misiniz?

İlk refleks kameram Alman malı idi. Çok iyi hatırlamıyorum. Işıkölçeri kırılmıştı ve ben, çektiğim sahneye göre doğru hızla birleştirerek ve doğru diyafram aralığını dikkate alarak pozlamayı hesaplamak zorundaydım.

Fotoğraflarınıza bakan insanlara kendiniz ve duygularınızla ilgili aktarmak istedikleriniz ve fotoğraf çekme amacınız nedir?

Her fotoğraf eşsiz bir andır, o bir duygudur, bir gülüş, bir hayvanla ortak bir göz kırpışıdır. Fotoğraf çekerken amacım bir şekilde an’ı yansıtmaktır. Birilerinin gülümseyişini sağlamak, ufak bir neşe, üzüntü anını yansıtmak ya da o anın benzersiz değerinin anlaşılmasını sağlamaktır.

Yalnız başınıza mı yoksa diğer fotoğrafçılarla birlikte mi fotoğraf çekersiniz?

Bazen fotoğraf çekmeye çıktığımda bir kaç arkadaşımla birlikte giderim. Onların bazıları da fotoğrafçılıkla ilgilenen kişilerdir. Diğer zamanlarda yalnız başıma çıkarım, kameramla birlikte yalnız başıma olmayı da severim.

Fotoğraf için nereyi ya da nereleri tercih edersiniz?

Fotoğraflarımı gören pek çok insan vahşi yaşamı çekmek amacıyla dünyayı geziyor olmamdan ötürü şanslı olduğumu söylerler. Gerçek ise şu; bana bunu söylediklerinde gülümsüyorum, maalesef bu bahsedilen seyahatleri yapmıyorum. Tüm fotoğrafları hayvanların özgürce dolaştıkları parklarda yahut hayvanat bahçelerinde çekiyorum.

Hayvanları portrelerken çevrelerine dikkat ediyorum, bir kafeste yahut o hayvanın bana ne ifade ettiğine dair fikrimi engelleyecek unsurların olduğu yerde çekmiyorum.

İnanıyorum ki bu, onlara değer vermenin ve onlara özgürlüklerini bağışlamanın bir yoludur çünkü günlük yaşamlarında onlar buna sahip değiller. Diğer yandan Afrika’ya seyahat etmenin ve rüyalarımdaki diğer yerlere gitmenin yollarını arıyorum.

Uzman olmanın anlamı nedir?

Bir disiplin yahut bir hareket içinde uzmanlaşmış kişi olduğunu sanıyorum. Fotoğrafçılık manasında, tüm zamanını fotoğrafçılığın kapsadığı konulardan (portre, manzara, toplumsal gibi) birine adamış kişidir.

Esasında, ben kendimi herhangi bir şeyde uzmanlaşmış olarak görmüyorum. Fauna (hayvanat) ve manzara fotoğrafçılığında daha rahat hissetmeme rağmen tüm disiplinleri kapsamaya çalıştım.

Portfolyonuz harika hayvan ve manzara fotoğrafları içeriyor. Bize çekimleriniz hakkında biraz ipuçları verebilir misiniz?

Fotoğrafçılığı tanımlamak için genel karakteristik özellikler kurmanın mümkün olmadığını düşünüyorum. Başarmayı istediğimiz sonuçlara dayalı olarak kamera bilgilerini değiştirmek gerekir. Örneğin, eğer hareket içerisinde net bir fotoğraf çekmek istiyorsak hareketli görüntülerdeki özü yakalamak istediğimiz zamankinden farklı parametreler vardır.

Ne çeşit ekipmanlar kullanıyorsunuz?

Benim kameram Canon 5D ve ödünç şu objektiflerim var: Canon 100-400 L, 24-70 L, 17-40 L and 50 f/1.4, also a flash EX- Canon 580, bir üçayak ve çeşitli filtreler.

Bu harika çekimlerin sırrı nedir? Çekimden evvel meditasyon yapar ya da müzik dinler misiniz? Ya da yalnızca konunuza mı konsantre olursunuz?

Bana göre fotoğrafçılık doğru bakmayı öğrenmek için çok önemlidir. Eğitimli bir göze sahipseniz fotoğraf gelir, siz sadece onun nasıl göründüğünü bilmeli ve malzemelerinize, tekniğe hakim olmalısınız.

Bazen, özellikle de hayvan fotoğraflarında hayvanın ifadesini, seçtiğiniz yerde, ışıkta ya da istediğiniz özel anda yakalamak için sabırlı olmanız gerekir.

Photoshop’da bazı düzenlemeler yapar mısınız? Eğer yapıyorsanız ne çeşit düzenlemeler?

Günümüzde, sonradan işlemenin gerekli bir şey olduğunu düşünüyorum. Daha önceleri bu, laboratuarda yapılıyordu ve şimdi fotoğrafları bilgisayarlarımızda ortaya çıkarma imkanına sahibiz.

Pek çok durumda fotoğrafı elde etme anı ve bunu izleyen işlemler fotoğrafın çekildiği zamanki parametreleri değiştirebilir. Bu, aradığımız hedefe bağlıdır.

Bu çalışmayı yaparken yaşadığınız bir hikaye yahut bir deneyim var mı?

Çok fazla. Mesela çok büyük bir piton yılanı, onu çekmeye çalışırken beni yakalamak üzereydi. Hoş bir anı da Cantabria Cabarceno Park’ındaki bir çift aslanın doğumuydu. Bu iki aslanı kollarımda tutmak keyifli bir tecrübeydi.

Aklınızda bundan sonrası için ne gibi projeler var?

Aslında yöremin belirli bir bölgesinin manzarasını ve toplumsal yanlarını gösterecek bir sergi hazırlıyorum. Aynı zamanda bir diğer sergi de, ışık kutularında hazırlanmış büyük formatlardaki hayvan fotoğraflarından oluşuyor. Ve son olarak, aklımdaki bir diğer proje de maddi durumum elverir vermez Afrika’ya seyahat etmek. 

Can you give us some brief information about yourself and your journey of photograph?

My name is Miguel Angel de Arriba. I´m 44 years old. I live in Liencres, in a small village in the coast of Cantabria in the north of Spain.

I became interest in photography more than twenty years ago and I was able to make compatible my dedication to photogtafia with my studies (as a student) and after with my work.

For a while I have kept myself distant from photography and due to the digital multimedia revolution I have return to focus on phography and photography is what I do for a living. I have won many awards and I have made several exibitions.

What artists do you like? Who inspires you?

There are many photoghaphers that I admire, each one in his stile : Cartier Bresson, Brassai, Avedon, James Natchwey, Steve McCurry, Steve Bloom, Erwin Olaff, Chema Madoz, Ramon Masats…. It´s a wide list and each of them add his/her particular point of view. This is certainly nurture for those like me who certainly enjoy their work.
 

Can you give us some information about your technique shortly?

My first reflex camera was a German one. I don´t remember quite well…It has broken the expositure so I was forced to calculate the exposure according to the scene, combining the correct speed and this camera had broken the photometer, so so I was forced to calculate the exposure as I was seeing the scene combining certainspeed and taking into consideration the correct diaphragm´s aperture.

What do you want to transfer about yourself and your feelings to people looking at your photographs? What is your purpose taking photograps?

Each photograph is a unique instant, it´s a feeling, a smile, an accomplice wink with the animal, person or picture I take. My aim while I am taking a picture it´s to reflect that certain moment somehow.

It´s to be able to make someone smile, to transmit a little instant of joy, sadness or it makes feel the unique value of that moment.

Do you usually shoot alone or travel with other photographers?

Sometimes, when I go out to take some pictures I usually go with some friends.Some of them are also interested in photography. Other times, I go alone, I also like to enjoy the loneliness only with my camera.

Which place or places do you prefer to shoot wildlife?

Many people who have seen my photos told me that I´m lucky to travel around the world making photographies of the wild life.The truth is that, those words make me smile ; unfortunately I haven´t made those refered trips, I take all photos in parks where the animals are almost in freedom and also in zoos too.

I attempt to take care of the environment in which animals are portrayed: not like a cage animal and without elements which disturb my idea of what an animal means to me.

I believe that it is a way to dignify animals and to grant their freedom because they don´t have it in their daily life. Meanwhile, I´m very much looking forward to travelling to Africa and other trips of my dreams.

What're meaning to be a specialist?

I suppose that it´s the person who is expert in a discipline or an activity. In terms of photography, it will be the person who is dedicated full-time to one of the range type of subjects that photography covers: portrait, landscape, social, etc.

In fact, I don´t consider myself an specialist in someting, I tried to cover all the disciplines, although I find myself more confortable in fauna and landscape photography.

Your portfolio consists of great animal and landscape photographs. Can you give us some hints about the shooting time and seasons?

From my point of view, I think It is not possible to establish some general parameters to define certain way to photograph.

Depending on the results that we want to sucess, it is necessary to change the data of the camera, for example if i we want to take a clear picture in movement, the parameters are radically different that if we want to capture the essence of the movement with moved images.

What kinds of equipment do you usually carry for wildlife and landscape photography?

Actually, my camera is a Canon 5D and I have these zoom lents: Canon 100-400 L, 24-70 L, 17-40 L and 50 f/1.4, also a flash EX- Canon 580, a tripod and several filters.

What are the keys to these great shots? Do you make meditation before shooting or listen to music? Or just consentrate on your subject very well?

In my opinion, in photography it is very important to learn how to look. When you have a trained eye, the photo comes out, you only must know how it appears and to dominate the instruments and the technique for it.

Sometimes, mainly in the fauna photography, you have to be pacient to be able to capture the animal´s expression the selected place, that light or that special moment that you want of that animal.

Do you make some post processing on Photoshop? If yes, what kinds of?

All photos are processed.

I consider that a post-process is necessary at the moment, It was made in the laboratory some time ago, and nowdays we have the possibility of revealing the photos in our computer.

In many occasions, the moment of obtaining the photo and also the following processing could change the parameters of the photo´s taking. It depends on the target that we are looking for.

Is there one story / experience that stands out in the making of this work?

There are a lot of them. almost one in each by whenever one leaves to make photos.

Some remarkable examples: I remember when an enormous piton snake was on the verge of catching me while I was photographing it with his opened cockpit. Another more pleasant remember has been the birth of a pair of lions in the the Cabarceno´s Park in Cantabria. It was a delighted experience to have these little lions on my arms.

What are your next projects in your mind?

Actually I am preparing a exhibition that will show the landscape and the social aspect of certain zone of my region. I´m also in other exhibition about animals picture whose photos will prepared in light boxes of great format. And finally, another project that I have in mind it´s to travel to Africa as soon as my economy allows it.
