15 yaşımda elime bir fotoğraf makinası aldığım andan itibaren fotoğraf bir tutku haline geldi. Her zaman ‘sanat çocuğu’ olmuştum, kafamdaki görüntülerin aynılarını kağıt üstünde görene dek asla sakinleşmezdim. Bir fotoğraf makinası ile her şey yerli yerine oturdu.

Gençliğimde Ansel Adams, Minor White, Aaron Siskind, Paul Caponigro ve diğerleri ile atölye çalışmalarına katıldım.

Üniversiteden mezun olduktan sonra, fotoğraf üzerine bir yıllık burs kazandım ve bunun sonrasında, her türlü bahane ile fotoğraf makinamı bıraktım. Grafik tasarımcısı ve grafik tasarım eğitmeni oldum. Gözlerim farklı bir formatta yine çalışmaktaydı.

Bir kaç yıl önce dijital bir fotoğraf makinası aldım ve ilham perisi tutkuyla geri döndü. İnternetteki fotoğraf topluluğu, flick’a katıldım, bolca cesaret ve ilham topladım. Şu an 3,000 civarında fotoğraf yüklemişim ve fotoğraf günlüğümde dünyanın her yerinden 160,000 kişiden fazla ziyaretçim olmuş. Basılı bir kaç fotoğraf kitabım var, ve bu yıl içinde, içlerinde, şu an yaşadığım ve grafik tasarımı eğitmenliği yaptığım Portland, Oregon’da Cameraworks Galeri’de gerçekleşecek kişisel gösteriminde yer aldığı bir kaç gösterime katılacağım.

Bu fotoğraflarında ortaya koyduğu gibi, sözde “odaklama burjuva kavramıdır” diyen Cartier Bresson ile aynı fikirdeyim.

Hangi fotoğraf makinası? Çok fark etmez. Gerçekte fotoğrafları çekenler, gözlerimiz ve beynimiz ve görmenin heyecanıdır; bir şeyleri fark etmek, bir şeyleri düşlemek ve sihir gibi gerçekleşen şeyleri hediye olarak almak.

Fotoğraflarım flaşsız ve tripodsuz çekilmiştir ve Photoshop genel bir temizlik ve bazı küçük sihirler için kullanılsa da, çoğu efekt Photoshop ile değil, fotoğraf makinesinde, makine ile oluşturulmuştur.

Photography became a passion from the moment I picked up a camera at age of fifteen. I had always been an ‘art kid’, but could never quite get the images in my head to the page the way I saw them. With a camera, everything came together.

In my teens I took workshops with Ansel Adams, Minor White, Aaron Siskind, Paul Caponigro, and others.

After graduation from college I won a  year-long teaching fellowship in photography, and after that, for all kinds of reasons I put down my cameras . I became a graphic designer, and  a teacher of graphic design. The eyes were still at work, but in a different medium.

A few years ago I picked up a digital camera and the muse returned with a passion. I joined the online photography community, flickr, getting lots of encouragement and inspiration. At present I have over 3,000 photos posted, and my photostream has had more than 160,000 visitors from all over the world. I have several books of photographs available and will participate in several shows this year, including a solo show at Cameraworks Gallery in Portland, Oregon, where I now live and teach photography and graphic design.

Statement:

As these photos suggest, I agree with Cartier Bresson, who supposedly said, “Focus is a bourgeoise concept.”

I photograph verbs, light, geometry, time passing.

What camera? It doesn’t matter much. Our eyes and brain and the excitement of seeing are really what take photos;noticing things, imagining things and sometimes getting gifts

that happen like magic.

My photos are taken without flash or tripod, and most of the effects were done in-camera, not in Photoshop, although it was used for general clean-up and a few small miracles.

I hope my photos speak to you. I hope they sing songs to you.
