Bangkok’un en büyük gecekondu toplumu olan Klong Toey’in merkezinde “70 Rai” adlı bir semt bulacaksınız. Bangkok’un yoğun limanının hemen yanındaki 70 Rai’nin, uyuşturucu ve şiddetle kötü bir şöhreti vardır.

Fakat, onun kötü şöhretini görmezden gelerek 70 Rai’yi bir gün  ziyaret etmelisiniz. Bunu yaptığınızda, kırsal Thailand köylerindeki gibi geleneksel Thai komşuluk ilişkilerini göreceksiniz, (her mahallenin hoparlörlerinden gelen yüksek sesler, işe giden aileler ve sokaklarda oyunlar oynayan pek çok çocuk) Buradaki aileler;  liman , yiyecek satıcıları ve tüm Bangkok sokaklarında çokça görülen hurda toplayıcılarına  mal getirir götürürler . Aileler çocukları için çok fazla çalışırlar ve ancak güç bela geçinirler.

70 Rai, birçok ibadet eviyle kutsal bir yerdir. Burada tapınaklar ve camiler vardır. Yolun sadece birkaç yüz metre aşağısındaki koru, tapınak kalıntıları ile doludur. Dönemecin hemen ötesindeki mezbahanın yanında, kilisesinde yıllarca rahiplik yaptığım yerde Koyu Katolik bir toplum bulunur.

70 Rai’yi diğer herşeyden daha açık bir şekilde anlatmak gerekirse; ( tapınaklar ve camiler, tehlike, korku ya da yoksulluktan daha açık bir şekilde) burada, büyük ailelerini destekleyen ve komşuluk ruhunu, neşesini ve kutsallığını sürdüren, gururlu aile reisi pek çok büyükanne yaşar. Bu büyükanneler paylarına düşenden daha fazla fındık çiğneyebilir, olmak gerektiği zaman çivi kadar sağlam olabilirler, uzun süre angarya işlerde çalışabilirler ama her nasılsa torunlarını kucaklamaya ve hatta şımartmaya zaman da bulurlar.

70 Rai’nin aile reisi kadınlarını desteklemek için, kuruluşumuzun işletiminde uzun süredir devam etmekte olan Fakir Mahalle Kadınları Kredi Birliği mevcuttur.Kredi Birliği, bu kadınların tefecilerden borç almasını önleyerek geçimlerini sağlamalarına yardım eder ve onlara torunlarına tatlı pişirmeleri için biraz daha zaman tanır.

Fotoğrafçı Yoonki Kim birkaç aydır, bizim sosyal hizmet görevlilerimizden Bayan Saisunan Tomyin ile birlikte  Kadınlar Grup üyelerine olan ziyaretlere  katılıyor.

Pek çok fotoğrafçı, fakir mahallelere kötü tarafından bakar ama Yoonki farklı şeyler görür. O, 70 Rai’ye büyükannelerimizin, torunlarımızın, öğretmenlerimizin, rahiplerimizin, imamlarımızın,  papazlarımızın, yiyecek satıcılarımızın, erişte satan kadınlarımızın gözleriyle bakar. O, 70Rai’yi bizim gördüğümüz gibi; yaşam, umut ve sevgi  dolu bir çevre olarak görür.

In the heart of Klong Toey, Bangkok’s largest slum community, you’ll find a neighborhood called “70 Rai.”  Just next to Bangkok’s busy port, 70 Rai has an unsavory reputation, mostly to do with drugs and violence.

But you should ignore its notoriety and come visit 70 Rai yourself some day. When you do, you will see a traditional Thai neighborhood, much like rural Thai villages, with community leaders setting the tone of each neighborhood on blaring loudspeakers; families going about the business of celebrating life; and lots and lots of kids in the streets doing kid-like things. The parents here are the day laborers who carry goods to and from the port and the food vendors and scrap collectors who fill all of Bangkok’s streets. Subsistence living is the norm here. Parents work mighty hard for the sake of their children and just barely get by.

70 Rai is a holy place, too, with many houses of worship. There are temples and mosques here.  A sacred grove full of temple relics lies just a few hundred meters down the road. A vibrant Catholic community can be found just beyond the bend, beside the slaughterhouse, where I worked many years in their church as their Parish Priest.

Perhaps what defines 70 Rai with greater clarity than anything else – more clearly than the temples and mosques, the danger, the fear, or the poverty - are the many grandmothers who live here, the proud matriarchs who support large extended families and who maintain the spirit and joy and holiness of our neighborhood. These grandmothers may chew more than their fair share of beetle nut; they may be tough as nails when they have to be; they may work long, arduous hours every day at the most menial chores; but somehow they also find time to hug their grandchildren and even spoil them with their love.

To support the matriarchs of 70 Rai, we have a long-standing Slum Women’s Group & Credit Union operating at our foundation. The credit union helps keep these women out of debt to neighborhood loan sharks, which helps keep their struggles in life more manageable and gives them a little more time to bake candy for their grandchildren.

For several months photographer Yoonki Kim joined one of our social workers, Ms. Saisunan Tomyin, on visits to our Women’s Group members. 

Most photographers look at the dark side of the slums, but Yoonki sees something different. He looks at 70 Rai through the eyes of our grandmothers and grandchildren, our teachers, our Monks, Imams and Priests, our food vendors and our noodle shop ladies: He sees 70 Rai  as we do - as a vibrant family neighborhood, full of life, full of hope, full of love.

Fotoğraf yaşamımı değiştirdi. Hala bir işadamıyım (taşımacılık sanayisi) ama dünyayı fotoğrafçı gözleriyle görüyorum. Gerçeğin olumlu yanını seviyorum. Dünyada yaşayan herkesin günlük yaşamdan hoşlandığını düşünürüm-bilinçli şekilde ya da değil. Ve bunun, uygarlığı yokolmaktan koruyan insanın en önemli parçası olduğuna inanırım.

İnsanlar mutlu yaratıldılar, bu benim dünya görüşüm. Onları mutlu, canlı ve yaşamdan zevk alırken fotoğraflamayı severim.

70 Rai projesine başlama sebeplerim:

1. Mekan ofisime çok yakın. 10 dakikada oraya ulaşabilirim. Bu nedenle, zamanımın ve paramın çoğunu gözden çıkarmaya gerek olmadan sık sık gidiyorum.

2. Belgesel çalışmaların çoğu fakirlerin gecekondu evlerini gösterir. Ama ben gecekondulardaki fakir insanların da büyük mutluluklar yaşadıklarına inanıyorum. Hatta onlar bazen, çok zor şartlardaki günlük yaşamlarına rağmen zenginlerden daha mutludurlar.

Projeye 2006’da başladım.

Bölgeye haftada 3-4 defa gidiyorum.

Şu anda ikibuçuk yıl oldu.

Çok tehlikeli bir bölge. Bangkok’da bir taksiciye 70 Rai’ye gitmek istediğinizi söylediğinizde, taksi şoförü özellikle gün batımından sonra gitmek istemeyecektir. Burası; uyuşturucu satıcıları, müptelalar, suçlular, HIV taşıyıcıları ile ünlüdür. Burda birbirine sıkı sıkıya bağlı bir toplum vardır ve yabancılara şüpheli gözlerle bakarlar. Beni kendilerinden biri olarak kabul etmeleri 3-4 ay aldı.

İnsanların fotoğraflarını çektim ve onlar için bastırdım. Şimdi onlardan biriyim. Oradaki genç ve yaşlı insanlarla sohbet ediyor ve projemden gerçekten keyif alıyorum.

Bu projeye yapabileceğim kadar devam edeceğim. Belki 5 yıl, belki 10 veya daha fazla. Onlar benim ailem gibi...

70 Rai projesi için 2 kamera kullanıyorum. Nikon FM2 ve Rolleiflex. FM2 güvenilir ve gövdesi hafif .Her zaman kolaylıkla taşıyabilirim. 20mm, 24mm ve 28 mm lensler kullanıyorum. 28 mm ile başladım daha sonra 20mm ile değiştirdim. Şimdi 24mm(2.0) MF lensi taktım. Rolleiflex (3.5F), daha çok portreler için. Manuel kameraları seviyorum.

Herşeyden önce, bunlar ucuz oluyor. Modern kameraların sahip olduğu özelliklere ve programlara bel bağlamaksızın işinizin içine daha çok girebilirsiniz. Aynı zamanda, deklanşöre basmadan evvel size düşünme zamanı sağlarlar. Bence manuel kameraların en iyi yanı, işinizi zorlaştırıcı oluşlarıdır.

Kamera çantası ışığı bulundurmak da çok faydalıdır. Çok fazla donanıma sahip olan kişi hangisini kullanacağını düşünürken siz konuya daha yakın konsantre olabilirsiniz.

Fazla film kullanmam. Peşpeşe çekim yapmam. Birden fazla çekim yaparken konsantrasyonumu daha uzun süre korumak kolay değil.

Dikkatli bakarsanız her fotoğrafın isminde bir dosya numarası var. Bunlar, kullandığım film makarasının seri numarasıdır. Şimdiye kadar (Kasım 2002) 180 makara film kullandım (renkli ve siyah-beyaz karışık hepsi). Bir amatörün çok fazla film kullanması bana doğru gelmiyor. Her halükarda fimleri cebimden satın almak zorundayım.

Pek çok fotoğrafçı mümkün olduğunca çok film kullanmayı önerir. Ama ben aynı fikirde değilim. Eğer bir sahneyi yakalamakta başarısız olursan ne farkeder ki? Her neyse bu sizi ilgilendirmez. Bu yüzden bir amatör olmaktan memnunum. Stres yok,sadece fotoğraflardan hoşlanma var.

Her çekim için, deklanşöre basmadan önce daha fazla düşünmeyi öneririm.

Arada bir dergilerle bazı işler yaparım. Kendim için değil de başkaları için fotoğraf çektiğim zaman strese girerim. Ama iş yaparken tarzımı korumaya çalışırım .Eğer bir fotoğraf editörü beni seçmişse bu, benim tarzımı istediği içindir. Sadece doğal ışık kullanırım (veya ona benzer aydınlatmalar).

Son olarak önemli bir şey; sitemi daha sık güncelleyemediğim için özür dilerim. Daha fazla çalışmaya söz veriyorum.

Photography changed my life. I am still a businessman (transportation industry) but, I see the world with eyes of photographer. I like the positive part of reality. I think everyone living in the world enjoys the everyday living - consciously or not.  And I believe that is the most important part of human that could keep the civilization from extinction.

People are created happy, that is the way I see the world.   I like to take pictures of people, when they shows happiness, eagerness and joy of living.

The reason I started 70 Rai Project is;

1.       The place is close to my office.  I can reach there within 10 minutes.  So that I go there often, without sacrificing much of my time and money.

2.       Most of documentary works about slum shows negative side of poverty.   But I do believe that the poor peoples life in the slum also have great happiness.

Sometimes they are even happier than rich people, though their daily life is hard.

I started the project January 2006. I go to the area 3-4 times a week. Now its 2 and half year.

It’s very dangerous area. If you catch a taxi in Bangkok, and ask to go to 70 Rai, taxi driver will not accept you especially after sunset. Its famous with drug dealers, addicts, criminals, HIV infected people. Its also tight knit communicty, thus stranger to be seen suspicous look.

It took 3-4 months I feel they accept me as part of them. I take photos of the people and make prints for them. Now I am one of them. I truely enjoy my project, chatting with young and old people there.

I continue this project as long as I can do. Can be 5 years, or 10 or longer. They are like my family...

For the 70 Rai project, I use 2 cameras. Nikon FM2 & Rolleiflex. FM2 is reliable and light body so that I can carry all the time. I use lenses of 20mm, 24mm & 28mm. In the beginning 28mm then changed to 20mm.   Now I settled with 24mm(2.0) MF lens. Rolleiflex (3.5F) is mostly for portraits.

I like manual camera. Firstly, its cheaper. And you can get involved more about your work than relying on programs and functions modern cameras have. It also give you time to think before press shutter. Best thing of manual camera is its inconvenience, I think.

Keeping camera bag light is also very helpful.

While one who have lots of equipment pondering which one to use, you can concentrate to the subject closer. I do not use much film. I don't do Bracketting. I think, its not easy for me to keep my concentration in its highest status so long to take more than one shot.

If you see carefully most of the image file has number in its name.  That is the serial number of rolls I use. As amateur, using many rolls of film doesn't look right for me.    Anyway I have to buy films out of my pocket.

Many photographers recommend to use films as many as possible.  But I don't agree to that. I rather suggest to concentrate more for each shot and think more before press the shutter. If you fails to catch a nice scene, what's the big deal? Anyway its not your job.

So, I enjoy the status being amateur. No pressure, just enjoying photos.

I do some assignment for magazines, once in a while.   I feel pressure when I take pictures for others (not for my own).   But, I try hard to keep my style when I do the jobs.   If a photo editor chose me, that means he/she wants something in my style.    I use only natural light (or lightings as it is) mostly.

Last, not the least, I apolozise not to update the site more often. I promise try harder.
